Indonesia National Football Team have an opportunity to end their title drought that has stretched back to 1991. To achieve this, the Garuda Squad must defeat Thailand in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 final match hosted at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK), Jakarta on Monday, 5 October 2026.

Indonesia progressed to the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 grand final as Group A winners, while Thailand locked in first place position for Group B.

Rules for this inaugural tournament organised by FIFA specify that only group winners qualify for the final match. Meanwhile, runners-up from each group will compete against one another for third place.

For Indonesia, this fixture against Thailand is far more than just a tournament final. This match presents the chance to end a 35 year wait since the senior men's national team last lifted an official competitive trophy.

Indonesia's last recorded senior regional title was won at the 1991 SEA Games. At that time, Indonesia also faced Thailand in the final, and claimed the championship after winning 4-3 following a penalty shootout.

Since that moment, Indonesia have been unable to secure another senior level title within the ASEAN region. That chance has now returned through the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, this new tournament format that sends both group winners directly through to the final.

Indonesia did win the 2023 SEA Games hosted in Cambodia, where Indra Sjafri's squad beat Thailand 5-2 in the final. However that title is not classified as a senior national team achievement, as men's football at the SEA Games enforces age limit restrictions.

Across other ASEAN competitions, Indonesia have also never lifted the AFF Cup trophy. In fact, the Garuda squad holds one of the records for most final defeats, having finished runners-up on six separate occasions.

This opportunity has now arrived once more. John Herdman's side are just one match away from claiming the very first FIFA ASEAN Cup trophy, alongside the chance to create new historic milestones for Indonesian Football.

Indonesia head into this final with strong momentum. In their final Group A fixture, Garuda defeated Bangladesh by a dominant 9-2 scoreline at SUGBK on Thursday, 1 October.

This heavy victory over Bangladesh confirmed Indonesia's first place finish in Group A, while also significantly boosting player morale. Mitchell Baker notably scored five goals during that match, making him one of the key players to watch ahead of the final.

Nevertheless, Thailand is not an opponent that can be underestimated. They finished as Group B champions, and will arrive at SUGBK with the clear objective of finishing the tournament as the first ever title holders.

This final also carries special historical significance for Indonesia, as Thailand was the same opponent they faced in the 1991 SEA Games gold medal match.

Thirty five years later, both nations will meet once again in a title deciding fixture, this time on the FIFA ASEAN Cup stage.

Indonesia will have the chance to become champions in front of their home supporters. SUGBK is confirmed as the host venue once again for the Garuda squad, after previously hosting the nine-goal rout against Bangladesh.

Indonesia will require a complete, full performance to overcome Thailand and secure this trophy for the Garuda.
