Jakarta – Indonesia National Football Team has made history as the first ever champions of the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup, after defeating Thailand in a dramatic final match held at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (GBK), Jakarta on Monday, 5 October 2026.
Indonesia won 4-2 via penalty shootout, after both sides remained tied 2-2 at the end of 120 minutes of play. Dean James put Indonesia ahead in the 84th minute, but Thailand equalised just three minutes later through Iklas Sanron.
Thailand even turned the game around to take the lead in extra time, with Peeradol Chamrasamee scoring in the 111th minute. However, Elkan Baggott became Garuda's saviour when he netted the equaliser in the 116th minute, forcing the match to be decided on penalties.

Indonesia kept their composure throughout the tense shootout. Thailand failed to convert spot kicks from Sarach Yooyen and Nattapong Sayriya, with Emil Audero emerging as the hero after saving Nattapong's attempt. Indonesia eventually sealed the 4-2 win and lifted the FIFA ASEAN Cup trophy for the very first time.
This title marks a major milestone for John Herdman and the Garuda Squad. That said, this victory over Thailand also exposed a number of outstanding issues that require immediate attention.
Herdman must not grow complacent. Far stiffer challenges lie ahead, as Indonesia will next compete at the 2027 AFC Asian Cup hosted in Saudi Arabia. Indonesia has been drawn into Group F alongside Japan, Qatar and Thailand. Garuda are scheduled to face Japan on 11 January 2027, Qatar on 16 January, and Thailand on 20 January.
Football Analyst Ronny Pangemanan stated that Herdman must conduct a full evaluation immediately following the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup triumph. According to Pangemanan, this success must not lead the Indonesian side to believe they have reached their peak.
Instead, Herdman must strengthen the squad, including ensuring consistent quality and sufficient depth across every playing position. Competing against Japan and Qatar at the Asian Cup will demand an entirely different standard of play. Indonesia must have reliable backup players ready for situations involving injuries, accumulated suspensions, or tactical adjustments mid-match.
Meanwhile, Erwin Fitriansyah noted that the Indonesia National Team has shown consistent improvement in performance. Even so, this progress must be accelerated further — particularly for the defensive line.
One clear warning sign appeared during Indonesia's final Group A match against Bangladesh at the FIFA ASEAN Cup. While Garuda secured a dominant 9-2 victory, the two goals conceded to Bangladesh cannot be dismissed. Indonesia was even forced to score three late goals in the closing stages just to secure top spot in Group A and advance to the final round.
These defensive vulnerabilities resurfaced again in the final against Thailand. After taking a 1-0 lead, Indonesia allowed Thailand to equalise just three minutes later. During extra time, Thailand — who were down to 10 men — even managed to take a 2-1 lead before Baggott rescued Indonesia with his equaliser five minutes from the end.
These observations confirm that transition play between attack and defence requires urgent focus. When losing possession, Indonesian players must re-organise into defensive shape far quicker. Conversely, when winning back the ball, transition movements forward must be executed faster and with better structure.
Against opponents like Japan, Qatar and Thailand, even the smallest gaps will be heavily punished. All these sides possess players with superior individual quality and far sharper ability to exploit open space.
For this reason, the victory over Thailand should not only be celebrated as a trophy win. The 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup title must be treated as both a foundation for future progress, and a reference point for critical improvements.
Indonesia has already proven that they can compete and win under high pressure. Now Herdman must take this squad to the next level: more solid at the back, faster in transition play, more mature in game management, and with proper squad depth.
The next target is clear: to qualify out of the group stage at the 2027 AFC Asian Cup. The experience of facing Thailand in the FIFA ASEAN Cup final will be a valuable advantage, as both nations will meet once again in Group F.
Discussion regarding Indonesia's victory over Thailand, as well as preparations for the 2027 Asian Cup, was the main topic of the Itsme Podcast recorded at Sentul Studio, Bogor on Tuesday, 6 October 2026. The podcast was hosted by Raisha and Gilang Respaty, featuring analysis from Ronny Pangemanan and Erwin Fitriansyah on the national team's progress and remaining challenges.
The championship title has been secured. It is perfectly fine to enjoy this euphoria. But for John Herdman and the entire Garuda Squad, the real challenge is only just beginning.
Indonesia may celebrate this triumph today, but work for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup begins right now.
