Choosing a destination for your dream trip is no easy matter. There are countless places across the globe boasting breathtaking scenery, historic architecture, and even rare natural phenomena. However, a recent study has ranked five top destinations for travellers looking to turn their ideal travel plans into reality.
The Sagrada Família Basilica in Barcelona, Spain, claims first place. This iconic masterpiece by architect Antoni Gaudí outranked India's Taj Mahal as well as the aurora borealis, the northern lights phenomenon that draws visitors to multiple countries around the arctic circle.
As reported by Travel + Leisure, this ranking was compiled from research conducted by Iglu Cruise, a cruise travel agency that evaluated 20 popular destinations worldwide to identify the locations most worthy of travellers' bucket lists.

Assessments were carried out using 10 indicators: social media popularity, weather predictability, wow factor, accessibility, safety, uniqueness, cultural value, aesthetic appeal, available amenities, and overall public user ratings from Tripadvisor.
Each indicator was scored between 1 and 10. Scores across all indicators were then totalled, for a maximum possible final score of 100.
In the final results, Sagrada Família scored 83 points, earning it the top position in this ranking.
Below are the five travel destinations that earned a place on the global traveller dream trip list.
1. Sagrada Família, Spain
Sagrada Família is far more than just a church with unusual architecture. This structure has become one of Barcelona's defining symbols, as well as a testament to the decades-long, still-unfinished journey of this architectural work.
Construction first began in 1882, with Antoni Gaudí taking over leadership of the project one year later. The Catalan architect developed a design with distinctive characteristics, including soaring spires and stone facades covered in intricate carved details.
Work on Sagrada Família has now spanned over 140 years. The central tower was finally completed in February 2026, though other sections including the main grand staircase remain under construction.
The appeal of this site is also reflected in international recognition. In 2025, Tripadvisor named Sagrada Família the number one tourist attraction in the entire world.
According to Iglu Cruise's assessment, three key factors that pushed Sagrada Família to first place were its social media popularity, reliable 24-hour weather predictability, and its immense cultural value.
Gaudí's Nativity Façade and Crypt beneath the basilica are also part of the Antoni Gaudí works inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
2. Taj Mahal, India
In second place, the Taj Mahal in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India, received a total score of 81. This white marble mausoleum is renowned worldwide both for its stunning architecture and the tragic love story that inspired its construction.
Emperor Shah Jahan ordered the building of the Taj Mahal in 1632, to serve as the final resting place for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.
Since its completion, it has become one of India's most recognisable landmarks and a travel destination for visitors from every country.
Cultural value, aesthetic beauty, and weather predictability were the primary factors that secured the Taj Mahal's position in Iglu Cruise's ranking.
As well as being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Taj Mahal is also included on the New 7 Wonders of the World list.
The combination of its historical significance and timeless beauty ensures this site remains one of the most coveted travel destinations for travellers everywhere.
3. Aurora Borealis, Norway & Arctic Regions
Unlike the previous two entries which celebrate architectural heritage, third place is awarded to the aurora borealis, the Natural Phenomenon known as the northern lights.
With a score of 79, the aurora ranked highly for its wow factor, uniqueness, and overall public audience ratings.
The aurora borealis occurs when charged particles emitted by the Sun interact with gases in Earth's upper atmosphere.
This reaction produces shimmering, multi-coloured light in shades of green, red, purple and blue that dances across the night sky.
This phenomenon is a major draw for travellers hoping to witness one of the most spectacular displays nature has to offer.
Tromsø, Norway is widely regarded as the most popular location for aurora chasing, though many other arctic territories also offer opportunities to view this event.
Travellers planning to see the aurora will need thorough trip preparation, as sightings are entirely dependent on natural conditions.
Even so, the chance to watch these glowing coloured lights dance across the sky is an extraordinary experience that makes this phenomenon well worth adding to any bucket list.
4. Niagara Falls, Canada & United States of America
Niagara Falls takes fourth place with a score of 78. This waterfall system, located right on the border between Canada and the United States, is one of North America's most famous natural tourist destinations.
The sight of massive volumes of water plunging over the cliff edge provides an experience very different from visiting historic built sites.
The thunderous roar of the falls, the fine mist that surrounds them, and the surrounding landscape all combine to create an unforgettable draw for visitors.
Niagara Falls can be experienced and viewed from many different vantage points. Straddling the international border, this destination can easily be included in travel itineraries for either Canada or the United States.
Its placement in the top 5 confirms that natural beauty remains a core priority for dream travel lists. For travellers looking for experiences outside major urban areas, Niagara Falls is an excellent option to consider.
5. Angkor Wat, Cambodia
Completing the top five ranking, Angkor Wat in Cambodia achieved a score of 77. This ancient temple complex is one of Southeast Asia's most iconic landmarks, and an essential destination for travellers interested in ancient history, architecture and traditional culture.
Angkor Wat delivers a unique Travel Experience through its monumental structures, intricately carved reliefs, and the atmosphere of the Historic Precinct. This complex is also the most widely recognised national symbol of Cambodia.
For visitors, a trip to Angkor Wat is not just about viewing an impressive building, but an opportunity to connect with the traces of a lost ancient civilisation.
Its distinctive architecture and profound historical value make this temple complex fully deserving of a place on the global dream destinations list.
Angkor Wat's appearance in the top five also demonstrates the enduring international appeal of Southeast Asia's Cultural Heritage for global travellers.
All five of these destinations offer very different experiences: from marvelling at iconic architecture and immersing oneself in history, to witnessing extraordinary natural wonders.
For travellers currently planning Overseas Holiday trips, this ranking can provide inspiration when choosing your next travel destination.
