Borneo FC have secured their ticket to the Quarter Finals of the 2026/2027 AFC Challenge League after defeating Tainan City with a 3-1 scoreline during the Group D fixture at Segiri Stadium, Samarinda on Wednesday night. After falling behind early, the Pesut Etam squad staged a rally to prove their mental fortitude and turn the match around.

With this victory, Mauro Jeronimo's side has collected six points from two matches, and currently leads the provisional Group D Standings.

However, the win over Tainan City was by no means an easy one. Borneo FC was forced into a difficult position right after the visiting side scored the opening goal early in the match.

Tainan City shocked the home crowd when Kim Sang-jun broke through Borneo FC's defence to score in the 11th minute.

Borneo FC attempted to respond by ramping up attacking pressure, but none of Pesut Etam's efforts resulted in a goal before the first half concluded. Tainan City maintained their 1-0 lead heading into the half-time break.

Entering the second half, Borneo FC shifted to a far more aggressive playing style. Their push paid off in the 51st minute, when attacking midfielder Juan Villa registered his name on the scoresheet to level the fixture at 1-1.

This goal became the turning point for Borneo FC. Just six minutes later, Pesut Etam found the net once again to take the lead, as Kablan N'Goma converted a supplied pass from Juan Villa in the 57th minute.

Holding a 2-1 advantage put Borneo FC in a far more comfortable position, while Tainan City were now forced to chase the deficit.

Head coach Mauro Jeronimo brought on Amar Brkic to boost his side's attacking threat. In the 82nd minute, Brkic completed Borneo FC's comeback with a spectacular strike fired from outside the penalty area.

Brkic's goal confirmed the 3-1 victory for Pesut Etam, and brought an end to Tainan City's resistance.

This result underlines Borneo FC's consistent form in Group D. With six points from two matches played, they can no longer be displaced from the top position, and have officially earned their progression to the 2026/2027 AFC Challenge League quarter finals.

Meanwhile, the race for the second qualifying spot alongside Borneo FC remains wide open. Tainan City and Yangon United will compete for the one remaining qualification ticket from Group D.
