Exploring Lawang Sewu, a Heritage Tourism Destination and Railway History Site located in Semarang

Semarang City offers many options for filling weekend trips. Beyond culinary spots and cultural tourism, this city presents a number of heritage buildings that bring visitors closer to history, one of which is Lawang Sewu in the Tugu Muda district.

Lawang Sewu is not only famous for its architectural style, but also has deep connections to the history of Indonesian railways. This building was constructed by the Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (NIS), the private railway company of the Dutch East Indies.

Construction of the main building began in 1904 and was completed in 1907. During that period, Lawang Sewu operated as the central headquarters of NIS, an organisation that played a key role in the development of railway networks across the Dutch East Indies.

The name Lawang Sewu became established among local communities due to the building's design which features an exceptionally high number of doors and windows. This title grew to become part of the site's tourist appeal, as visitors come to see this historic legacy structure in person.

Inside the Lawang Sewu complex, the history of Indonesia's railway journey can be explored through various collections, historical information, and dedicated educational spaces.

Visitors do not only view an old historical building, but also gain perspective on the development of the railway system across different eras.

This combination of appeal has kept Lawang Sewu as one of the most popular heritage destinations in Semarang.

Throughout 2024, Lawang Sewu recorded 639,091 visiting guests. In 2025, this visitor number reached 620,550 people. Meanwhile for the January to August 2026 period, Lawang Sewu received 376,997 visitors.

Lawang Sewu has welcomed a cumulative total of 1,636,638 visitors from 2024 up to August 2026. This figure demonstrates the strong public interest in historical tourism, as well as desire to learn more about preserved heritage structures.

Notably, travel to Semarang itself is also closely tied to railway services. The city's two main stations, Semarang Tawang Station and Semarang Poncol Station, served millions of passengers across the January-August 2026 period.

Semarang Tawang Station recorded 1,262,315 total passenger arrivals and departures during this period, broken down as 628,946 departing passengers and 633,369 arriving passengers.

Meanwhile Semarang Poncol Station handled 1,867,005 total passenger arrivals and departures, with 902,984 departing passengers and 964,021 arriving passengers.

Operational activity at both stations reflects the high level of public mobility travelling to and from Semarang City.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba stated that the existence of heritage destinations such as Lawang Sewu forms an integral part of the travel experience for people visiting Semarang.

"Railway travel holds a close relationship with the development of every city in Indonesia, including Semarang. Lawang Sewu stands as one of the heritage sites that preserves the full story of our railway journey from the past through to the present day. Visitors can discover this history through the building itself, displayed collections, and the information made available during their visit," stated Anne.

Based on data from the Semarang City Central Statistics Agency (BPS), total tourist arrivals in 2024 reached 7,345,373 people, consisting of 7,321,077 domestic tourists and 24,296 international tourists.

This data demonstrates the significant tourism potential of Semarang City, including for historical and heritage travel segments.
