Inter Miami do not want to lose Lionel Messi, and are preparing a contract that runs until 2030.

Inter Miami wants Lionel Messi to conclude his professional career in Major League Soccer (MLS). While Messi's current contract remains valid until the end of 2028, the club is reportedly already opening early extension talks to keep the superstar longer, and have him retire in the United States.

As reported by Pitchside-US, Contract Extension discussions between Inter Miami and Messi are currently ongoing. No final agreement has been reached yet, but the negotiation progress is noted to be showing positive signs.

Inter Miami is even considering extending Messi's contract all the way until 2030. This move forms part of the club's desire to retain the Argentinian player, while also recognising his contributions since he joined the club in 2023.

Messi's arrival brought massive change for Inter Miami. In the 2023 season, Messi helped the club claim the Leagues Cup title, before leading Inter Miami to win the league championship in the 2024 campaign.

The 2025 season did not end with any additional trophies for Inter Miami. Even so, Messi's form remained a talking point after he won the Player of the Season award for two consecutive years.

This consistent performance is one of the key reasons Inter Miami wants to retain Messi long term. The club has observed no signs of decline in Messi's contributions even as he advances in age.

Messi once again became the centre of global attention during the 2026 World Cup. He carried Argentina through to the tournament final, as one of Inter Miami's representatives on football's biggest global stage.

Argentina ultimately failed to lift the trophy after losing to Spain in the final. Nevertheless, Messi's performance once again demonstrated that his technical ability and on-pitch influence remain core strengths of his career.

Shortly after the 2026 World Cup concluded, Messi made a major career decision regarding his international playing future. Following the passing of his father, the player nicknamed La Pulga announced he was ending his tenure with the Argentina National Team.

This decision did not mean Messi was stepping away from football entirely. He stated he still wishes to continue his club career, making his future with Inter Miami a primary point of focus.

Inter Miami sees this situation as an opportunity to secure Messi's stay in MLS. For as long as the player has not announced his full retirement from professional football, the club is ready to provide a place for the star.
