The Indonesia National Team finally lifted the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 trophy after a dramatic final match against Thailand at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK), Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday evening, 5 October 2026 WIB.
The championship title was sealed after Garuda defeated Thailand via a dramatic penalty shootout. Both sides remained tied 2-2 after 120 minutes of play, before Indonesia claimed the shootout victory by a score of 4-2.
Emil Audero emerged as one of the most critical figures behind Indonesia's success. The Garuda national goalkeeper successfully denied Nattapong Sayriya's penalty attempt.

Thailand suffered another failed penalty when Sarach Yooyen's strike crashed directly against the goal frame.
All four appointed penalty takers for Indonesia converted their attempts perfectly. Kevin Diks, Dean James, Elkan Baggott, and Shayne Pattynama all scored their penalties without a single miss.
Indonesia Narrowly Avoided Defeat
The final match was tightly contested right from kickoff. Indonesia was forced to wait until the 84th minute to register their opening goal.
This goal came from a dead ball situation. Dean James' free kick took an unfortunate deflection off Sanron Iklas, altering the ball's trajectory before crossing into Thailand's goal.
Indonesia's lead did not hold for long. Just three minutes later, Iklas redeemed his mistake by scoring the equaliser, finishing off a Thai attacking build up down the right flank.
Indonesia then gained an advantage when Thailand were reduced to 10 players.
Nicholas Mickelson was shown a red card in the 81st minute after committing a foul by pulling Ole Romeny's shirt.
However, this numerical advantage was not enough for Indonesia to secure victory within regular 90 minutes.
Match drama only escalated during extra time.
In the 111th minute, Thailand turned the tie on its head. Peeradol Chamratsamee scored after receiving a pass from Anan Yodsangwal on a fast counter attack.
Indonesia found themselves on the brink of defeat, needing to salvage an equaliser with only minutes left on the clock.
Elkan Baggott The Last Minute Saviour
Garuda's fading hopes were reignited in the 116th minute. Elkan Baggott stepped up as the saviour, netting the late equalising goal. The 2-2 scoreline remained until the full 120 minutes of play concluded.
With no winner decided after extra time, the match would be settled via penalty kicks.
This was the stage where Emil Audero produced his match winning performance. One critical save combined with Thailand's shot hitting the post put Indonesia firmly in control, before all four of Garuda's penalty takers converted their attempts flawlessly.
Indonesia ultimately won the shootout 4-2, officially being crowned champions of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026.
Ending Indonesia's Long Senior Trophy Drought
This trophy carries historic significance for Indonesian Football. The 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup title stands as one of the greatest achievements for the senior Garuda Squad, ending a long period without a prestigious regional senior trophy.
Prior to this triumph, Indonesia's last notable men's football title was the 2023 SEA Games gold medal, won by beating Thailand 5-2 in the final. However that tournament used age-restricted squads, unlike this full senior international competition.
Indonesia has now won the very first edition of the FIFA ASEAN Cup, writing their name as the first ever nation to lift this tournament's trophy.
This achievement also serves as redemption after Indonesia's disappointing campaign at the ASEAN Championship 2026, where they were eliminated at the group stage.
Valuable Momentum Ahead Of 2027 Asian Cup
This victory over Thailand also carries extra strategic weight, as the two nations will meet once again in the upcoming 2027 Asian Cup tournament.
Indonesia and Thailand have been drawn into the same group alongside Japan and Qatar. The tournament will be hosted in Saudi Arabia next January.
Success at the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup will provide a massive confidence boost for the Garuda squad ahead of facing far tougher opposition at the Asian Cup.
Alongside lifting the trophy, Indonesia also broke a long unwanted head-to-head record against Thailand.
This win ended almost an entire decade of waiting for Garuda to defeat their regional rivals. Before this final, Indonesia had last beaten Thailand back in the first leg of the 2016 AFF Cup final at Pakansari Stadium, winning that fixture 2-1.
