Nine teams have maintained a perfect record, collecting six points from two Champions League matches. Meanwhile Lille, the club featuring Indonesia National Team Defender Calvin Verdonk, have not yet secured a single point.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Barcelona, Aston Villa, VfB Stuttgart, Liverpool, Sporting CP, Arsenal, Real Madrid, and Real Betis are the nine sides that opened the campaign with two consecutive wins.

These teams occupy the top nine positions in the provisional standings, with PSG sitting at the very top of the table.

Alongside pre-tournament favourites such as PSG, Barcelona, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Real Madrid, several clubs have caught public attention. Aston Villa, Stuttgart, Sporting CP, and Real Betis have emerged as early surprises after successfully locking in six points from their first two fixtures.

This early form confirms that the race for the knockout stages will not be contested exclusively by experienced elite clubs. Teams outside the favourite bracket also hold genuine chances to compete at the top of the table, provided they can maintain consistent performances.

Lille and Calvin Verdonk Remain Pointless

A very different situation applies for Lille. The French club fielding Calvin Verdonk are still without any points after two matches, currently ranked 34th out of 36 total participants.

This position has placed Lille under immediate pressure right at the start of the competition. They must turn their results around quickly to keep their knockout stage hopes alive, given there are still multiple matches left to play in the league phase.

Lille are not the only club that made a poor start to the season. Inter Milan, FC Porto, Slavia Prague, Napoli, LASK, Galatasaray, and Slovan Bratislava are also yet to register a single point from two matches.

Porto, who won the Champions League back in the 2003/04 season, currently sit outside the top 24. Meanwhile, Inter and Napoli are the two Italian representatives who also hold zero points so far.

These results highlight how tight competition is in the league phase. Reputation and past experience in European Competition do not guarantee a club will get off to a positive start.

Italian Sides Under Pressure, AS Roma Only On One Point

Italian representatives are facing major difficulties at the start of this campaign. AS Roma have only collected one point, placing them 25th in the table — outside the positions that grant progression to the knockout rounds.

Inter Milan and Napoli are in an even more precarious situation, having not picked up any points at all. Both sides must immediately recover form to avoid falling further behind clubs that have already accumulated points across the opening two matchdays.

Higher up the table, Bayern Munich is the highest placed side on four points at 10th position. Shakhtar Donetsk also holds four points in 11th place, while clubs on three points fill almost all remaining positions down to 24th.

With the standings still fully open to change, upcoming fixtures will present every team the chance to improve their ranking. Conversely, the nine teams already on six points will have the opportunity to solidify their positions at the top of the table.

New Champions League Format Makes Every Point Critical

Under the current Champions League format, league phase standings carry enormous weight. The eight highest ranked teams at the end of this phase will qualify directly for the Round of 16.

Meanwhile, teams finishing 9th to 24th will have to contest an additional playoff round to compete for the remaining eight Round of 16 spots. All clubs placing outside the top 24 will be automatically eliminated.

For this reason, early match victories are extremely valuable: they not only improve qualification chances, but also allow teams to avoid the extra playoff round.
