Persija Jakarta suffered their first defeat of the Super League 2026/2027 campaign, falling 2-3 to Persita Tangerang on Matchday 5 at Banten International Stadium, Serang, Saturday (17/10/2026). This result ended the perfect run of Macan Kemayoran, who had previously recorded four straight wins.

Persija's defeat has exposed issues that demand attention from Shin Tae-yong. Match dominance and high volume of created chances were not enough to secure victory. Persija held 76% possession and registered 21 total shots, yet still lost to a Persita side that only attempted 8 shots across the entire fixture.

Official I.League statistics recorded 10 on-target shots for Persija, while Persita produced just 5 attempts on goal. These figures confirm Persija generated far greater attacking volume, but failed to convert this superiority into maximum points.

Twice Fighting Back, Persija Still Dropped All Points

Persita took an early lead through Luquinhas in the 5th minute. Persija responded in the 18th minute via Fabio Calonego, bringing the score level at 1-1.

The hosts reclaimed the lead when Rayco Rodriguez scored in the 61st minute. Persija earned an equaliser from a penalty converted by Alexander Jeremejeff in the 74th minute.

Both sides were locked at 2-2, with the match seemingly heading for a Draw before Persita launched a late counter attack that was finished by Aleksa Andrejic in the 90+5th minute.

This stoppage time goal secured the 3-2 victory for Persita, and completely denied Persija even a single point from the fixture.

Rayhan Hannan Admits Persija Lacked Clinical Finishing

Rayhan Hannan acknowledged Persija performed well across both halves. However, he stated his side failed to properly capitalise on the opportunities created.

"I believe we played well, both in the first and second half. But just as Coach Shin said, we did not maximise our chances," Hannan stated, quoted from Persija's official website on Sunday (18/10).

This assessment aligns directly with the match statistics. Persija registered 21 shots, nearly triple Persita's 8 attempts. However, high attack volume will never automatically produce goals if final execution and decision making inside dangerous areas are not sharp.

On the other hand, Persita demonstrated far better efficiency with their chances. The home side also ruthlessly punished Persija's lapse of concentration late in the match.

Shin Tae-yong Highlights Defensive Weaknesses

Shin Tae-yong did not only criticise his side's failure to break down the opposition defence. The South Korean coach also admitted critical errors when defending against counter attacks.

"Since every goal we conceded came from counter attacks, this is clearly a major mistake on our part," Shin remarked.

He framed this defeat as an important learning opportunity for Persija to conduct internal evaluation and improve squad preparation.

Shin also acknowledged Persija struggled to penetrate Persita's defensive block, noting that the home players fought with far greater intensity throughout the match.

These statements confirm Persija's problems are not limited to finishing. The team must also improve defensive transition speed, counter attack awareness, and ability to maintain full concentration until the match is fully concluded.

While possession dominance allows Persija to control match flow, their defensive structure must remain ready to react rapidly whenever attacking moves break down.

Persija Remain Top, Persita Close The Gap

This defeat did not knock Persija off the top of the league table. Macan Kemayoran still hold 12 points, while both Persita and Dewa United Banten FC sit just one point behind on 11 points.

Persita have now recorded three wins and two draws from their opening five matches, remaining unbeaten. This victory over the league leaders proves Pendekar Cisadane are genuine top table contenders this season.

For Persija, this result serves as a warning that four opening wins do not guarantee an easy campaign. Consistency requires more than just match dominance: chances must be converted into goals, while defensive errors must be minimised.

Persija are scheduled to host Arema FC on Wednesday (21/10/2026) at 19.00 WIB. This next fixture will be Shin Tae-yong's first chance to prove that this defeat resulted in tangible improvements for the squad.

Persija still have solid foundations to bounce back. However, if they wish to retain their leading position, Macan Kemayoran must ensure on-field dominance is matched by clinical finishing in the final third and defensive resilience.
