Travel from Batam to Penang, Malaysia, has become far more convenient with the launch of a direct International Flight route connecting Hang Nadim Batam International Airport to Penang International Airport. This new route operated by Batik Air Malaysia will commence operations on 18 October 2026.

The launch of this Direct Flight service provides additional travel options for Indonesian Travellers looking to explore Penang for culinary trips, cultural visits, or even medical travel purposes, without requiring a transit stop in Kuala Lumpur.

Annang Setia Budhi, President Director of PT Batam International Airport (BIB), stated that this route was opened following market research which demonstrated strong two-way travel potential between Batam and Penang.

Prior to this launch, nearly all travel from Batam to Penang required transiting through Kuala Lumpur. With the new Direct Flight option available, residents of Batam and the wider Sumatra region now have a far more practical Air Travel alternative.

Exploring Penang's Cuisine and Culture

Penang is renowned as one of Malaysia's premier tourist destinations, offering a rich blend of food, history and culture. The city's diverse Malay, Chinese and Indian communities have shaped its distinctive local culinary identity, one of its biggest draws for visitors.

In George Town, visitors can explore the Historic District which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, admire public street art, and visit heritage buildings that document the city's long layered history.

For food enthusiasts, a trip to Penang also offers the chance to sample classic regional dishes and experience the full depth of flavours from the area's multiple culinary traditions.

This direct air connection from Batam opens up the possibility of planning short break trips to Penang. Travellers are still advised to align available flight schedules with their intended holiday duration and individual travel requirements.

Penang as a Medical Travel Destination

Beyond culinary and Cultural Tourism, Penang is also well established as a popular medical travel destination for Indonesian visitors.

High quality healthcare facilities in the state are the primary reason many people travel to Malaysia for medical consultations, health screenings, and other required medical services.

Annang confirmed that proven demand for medical travel was one of the key considerations behind launching the Batam–Penang route.

With direct flights now available, residents in Batam and surrounding areas have a much simpler access option when planning medical trips. Travellers are reminded to verify flight schedules match confirmed appointment or treatment timings provided by their healthcare provider.

Batam – Penang Flight Schedule

As officially announced by PT BIB, this route will operate three times per week, with all flights operated by Batik Air Malaysia.

Flights departing Batam for Penang are scheduled to leave at 11.30 WIB (Western Indonesian Time) and arrive at 13.55 Malaysian local time, with an estimated flight duration of 1 hour 25 minutes. Return flights from Penang to Batam are scheduled to depart at 10.30 local Penang time. Travellers are strongly advised to check the latest updated schedules directly via the airline's official channels prior to travel.

Batam Poised To Attract More Inbound Tourists

This direct flight connection does not only improve access for Indonesian travellers heading to Malaysia, it also creates potential to increase Malaysian Tourist Arrivals into Batam.

Batam itself offers a wide range of activities for visitors, including local cuisine, retail shopping, coastal recreation, and Island Hopping day trips. This direct air link is expected to expand travel options for visitors wanting to experience destinations on both sides of the border.

Danang Mandala Prihantoro, Corporate Strategic Communications for Lion Air Group, stated that the carrier is targeting passenger load factors above 90% on this new route, as reported by ANTARA News Agency.

This target reflects operator expectations for travel demand on the new route, and does not represent actual current load factor figures.

Danang also expressed hope that this direct flight service will help establish Batam as one of Indonesia's key international entry points for tourists. Penang is expected to act as a connecting hub for international travellers continuing their journey onwards to Batam.

With this additional International Flight service now available, Batam and Penang have an opportunity to strengthen ties across tourism, Business and economic activities. For travellers, this new route delivers a far more convenient cross-border travel option, for both holidays and other personal travel needs.
