Kimi Antonelli's Spectacular Comeback at the Italian GP: Starting from 19th position, he finished the race as the champion.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli delivered one of the most remarkable comeback stories of the 2026 Formula 1 season. Starting the Italian Grand Prix from 19th position at Monza Circuit, the Mercedes driver instead emerged as the race winner, claiming his seventh victory of the campaign.

The race on Sunday 6 September became the stage for the 20-year-old Italian driver to demonstrate his composure and sharp tactical judgement. The engine change penalty that forced him to start from the very back of the grid did not halt Antonelli's charge to the top step of the podium.

"This is unbelievable. I am so happy, I never imagined I could win this race. But we worked incredibly hard to pull this off, and I am over the moon right now," Kimi was quoted by official Formula 1 media.

This Monza victory carries extra historic weight: Antonelli is the first Italian driver to win the Italian Grand Prix since Ludovico Scarfiotti achieved the same feat back in 1966.

Tyre Strategy Proved The Deciding Factor

Antonelli did not rely solely on raw speed to fight his way up from 19th place. The critical turning point came after a red flag was deployed when Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc crashed heavily into the circuit barriers.

This disruption allowed Mercedes to completely reset their race approach. Antonelli seized his opportunity during the Virtual Safety Car period that activated halfway through the 53-lap grand prix.

The Mercedes driver entered the pits to switch onto medium compound tyres. This call became the defining difference from his teammate George Russell, who remained out on track running hard compound tyres.

As the race entered its closing stages, Kimi grew increasingly comfortable holding consistent race pace. By contrast, Russell began struggling badly to maintain his speed.

"In the end we committed to that pit stop, Russell stayed out on the alternate strategy and he fought major tyre degradation right through the final laps. With the fresher, better tyre underneath me I could keep building my pace, fine tune it, and drive on for the win," Kimi explained.

Antonelli's gamble paid off perfectly. He held the lead unchallenged all the way to the chequered flag, finishing clear of Russell who took second place.

Seven Wins, 267 Championship Points

The Monza result further underlines Antonelli's growing dominance in the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship battle. From the 13 rounds completed so far this season, the Italian driver has already secured seven grand prix victories.

With this home race win added to his tally, Kimi holds a commanding lead at the top of the Drivers' Standings with 267 points. George Russell sits in second place on 201 points.

This 66 point gap gives Antonelli a significant buffer as the season enters its final stretch. However the title fight is not yet settled, with 10 rounds still remaining on the calendar.

The remaining ten races will be held in Spain, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Singapore, the United States, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

With seven wins from 13 races, Kimi is not just the most consistent driver of the 2026 season: he has now progressed from being a strong title contender to the clear outright favourite for the World Championship crown.
