Last Minute Drama Colours Everton vs Manchester United Clash, The Red Devils Squander Their Winning Lead

Manchester United dropped points once again on matchweek three of the 2026/27 English Premier League. Travelling to Everton's home ground, the Red Devils twice held the lead before ultimately being forced to settle for a 2-2 draw.

Played out at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday, this fixture remained fiercely contested right down to the final minutes. Manchester United had been on the brink of victory before Everton struck an injury time equaliser.

This draw leaves Manchester United with just four points from three matches. Michael Carrick's side currently sit 11th in the provisional league standings.

Everton meanwhile sit one place above Manchester United. David Moyes' squad have collected five points from three games to occupy 8th position, according to official Premier League website data.

Manchester United Dominated But Failed To Score In The First Half

Manchester United took attacking initiative immediately from kickoff. The Red Devils created their first chance of the game as the match reached the 7th minute.

Bruno Fernandes spotted space outside the penalty area and unleashed a first time strike. However, the United captain could not find the net, with his effort crashing against Everton's crossbar.

Another threat came from Youri Tielemans in the 18th minute. The midfielder tested Jordan Pickford with a long range shot, but the Everton goalkeeper successfully kept the effort out.

Matheus Cunha was presented with an opportunity in the 22nd minute. Receiving the ball just inside the penalty area, Cunha went for goal only to send his attempt well over the bar.

As the first half drew to a close, Everton began to find their rhythm. Thierno Barry very nearly put the hosts ahead in the 43rd minute, meeting a cross with a headed effort that floated just above the goalframe.

Everton threatened once more in first half stoppage time. Jarrad Branthwaite found himself perfectly positioned to meet a loose rebound, directing his low shot towards the bottom left corner.

But Senne Lammens produced an outstanding reflex save to deny the effort, and the first half concluded goalless.

Mbeumo And Sesko Hand United The Lead, Everton Refuse To Back Down

Manchester United broke the deadlock almost immediately after the half time break. Just one minute into the second half, Bryan Mbeumo put his side 1-0 up.

Mbeumo fired a powerful strike from outside the penalty area. The ball flew hard into the bottom left corner, leaving Pickford with no chance of making the save.

Falling behind spurred Everton to ramp up their attacking pressure. Brennan Johnson looked for an opening with a long range shot in the 58th minute, only for his effort to be blocked by a Manchester United player.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was then presented with two separate chances to level the scores for Everton, first in the 59th minute before another opportunity arrived nine minutes later.

On both occasions Lammens stood firm. The Manchester United goalkeeper reacted sharply to deny Dewsbury-Hall twice in quick succession.

Everton's persistent pressure finally paid off in the 83rd minute. Tyrique George received a pass from Hayden Hackney inside the penalty area, before firing an accurate finish into the top right corner.

The scoreline was now 1-1.

Manchester United wasted no time in retaking the lead. Just six minutes later, Benjamin Sesko scored the Red Devils' second goal of the afternoon.

Luke Shaw delivered a looping cross into the penalty area, which Sesko met with a well placed header that nestled into the back of Everton's net.

Manchester United were back ahead 2-1, and appeared set to secure all three points.

But there was still final drama to come.

In the 90+6th minute, Everton produced the moment that turned the match on its head. Ainsley Maitland-Niles latched onto a loose rebound before firing a spectacular strike into the top left corner.

This goal levelled the scores once again at 2-2.

There was no remaining time for Manchester United to mount another attack for a winning goal. The final whistle blew shortly after, confirming the 2-2 result.

With this outcome, the Red Devils return home with just a single point from their trip to Everton's ground. On two separate occasions they built a leading position, only to fail to protect their advantage until full time.
