Amid the Anak Krakatau eruption, the Jakarta-Bandung Whoosh high-speed train remains operating normally.

Jakarta - The Whoosh high-speed train service on the Jakarta-Bandung route continues to operate safely and normally, despite potential volcanic ash dispersion from Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait.

PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC) has intensified monitoring of all train facilities and infrastructure to ensure service continuity with passenger safety as the absolute top priority.

KCIC General Manager of Corporate Secretary Eva Chairunisa confirmed that multi-layered monitoring is being conducted across operations, safety, rolling stock, and infrastructure divisions. KCIC also runs dedicated inspection trains before daily passenger services commence.

"Based on monitoring results compiled at this time, all Whoosh facilities and infrastructure are functioning normally. No disruptive faults that would impact travel have been identified," Eva stated in an official release received by Antara in Jakarta on Monday, 07/09/2026.

Whoosh Route Conditions Under Continuous Monitoring

Passengers travelling with Whoosh may proceed with their journeys according to published schedules, unless KCIC issues formal notification of operational adjustments.

Monitoring is conducted both via the central Operation Control Center (OCC) and through physical on-site inspections along the full 142.3 kilometre Whoosh corridor.

All critical system components are checked, including the Overhead Catenary System (OCS) power network, power supply lines, rail tracks, signalling systems, and railway switches.

KCIC has also activated pre-prepared mitigation protocols. If abnormal conditions are detected, automatic alerts will trigger at the OCC and the train management system will automatically reduce Whoosh operating speeds as required.

Of the total route length, 82.7 kilometres consist of elevated tracks, 42.78 kilometres are ground-level at-grade tracks, while the line includes 13 separate tunnels with a combined total length of 16.82 kilometres.

Open-air sections of the route are receiving prioritised monitoring, as these areas carry the highest risk of volcanic ash exposure.

Train Driver Visibility Remains Normal

From an operational perspective, reports submitted by train drivers confirm that visibility along the entire route remains within acceptable normal parameters.

All Whoosh train units are fitted with windscreen wipers with pressurised water spray function, which can be activated to clear dust or volcanic ash accumulation on the driver's windscreen. This equipment maintains adequate visibility during journeys.

Should conditions deteriorate and visibility reduce, drivers will adjust train speeds in line with on-site conditions and established standard operating procedures.

KCIC is also remotely monitoring the condition of air filtration systems on all train units, as well as pantograph status via on-board CCTV.

Meanwhile, infrastructure inspections cover insulation components, overhead power systems, electrical substations, signalling hardware, and switch mechanism functionality. As of this update, all this equipment remains fully operational and has not been impacted by volcanic ash dispersion.

Passengers Advised To Monitor Official Updates

To prepare for potential changes in conditions, KCIC is conducting regular Volcanic Ash Risk Assessments using official meteorological data provided by the BMKG (Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics).

Assessment findings will form the basis for KCIC to implement additional mitigation measures should volcanic ash concentration levels increase enough to threaten Whoosh operations.

KCIC advises all passengers to wear face masks and eye protection, particularly when located in open outdoor areas of train stations. Passengers are also requested to follow all instructions from on-site staff, and monitor the latest official updates via the Whoosh contact centre and verified official social media channels.

At this stage, the Whoosh Jakarta-Bandung high speed train remains in full normal operation, while KCIC will continue adjusting operational protocols in real time based on volcanic ash conditions and live on-site monitoring results.
