Indonesia's tourism trajectory towards 2027 requires a solid foundation to interpret industry shifts and determine strategic action amid the dynamics of the global tourism landscape. To fulfil this need, the Ministry of Tourism has launched the Indonesia Tourism Outlook 2026/2027, a strategic document created to help all stakeholders understand developments within the national tourism sector.
This document is designed as an official reference to analyse industry dynamics, identify opportunities, anticipate challenges, and define the development roadmap for Indonesian Tourism through 2027.
Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri Wardhana stated that the Indonesia Tourism Outlook supports all parties in navigating ongoing changes within the global tourism industry. According to the Minister, sustained growth of the tourism sector must be reinforced through targeted strategies and cross-stakeholder collaboration.

For this purpose, the Indonesia Tourism Outlook serves as our shared compass to interpret shifts, recognise opportunities, and mitigate risks,” stated Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana in an official announcement released in Jakarta.
Compiled From Expert And Industry Perspectives
The Indonesia Tourism Outlook 2026/2027 was not developed solely from government viewpoints. The Ministry of Tourism engaged independent experts via dedicated surveys, alongside structured interviews with business operators and implementing partners across all the ministry's flagship programs.
This participatory approach is designed to align policy perspectives with the real on-ground conditions and operational needs of the tourism industry. As a result, this outlook document does not only describe current sector conditions, but also provides actionable insight into the future trajectory of Indonesian tourism.
The document outlines identified opportunities, prevailing challenges, and key priority focus areas for upcoming tourism development. This information will serve as formal reference material for both government bodies and private industry operators when formulating tourism sector development plans.
Beyond Chasing Raw Tourist Arrival Counts
The launch of the Indonesia Tourism Outlook 2026/2027 comes amid an ongoing positive growth trend for Indonesia's tourism performance. For the period January to July 2026, International Tourist arrivals reached 8.98 million visits, recording a 5.23 percent year-on-year increase over the same period in the previous year.
However, tourism growth should not be measured purely by visitor numbers alone. The Ministry of Tourism emphasizes that improving the quality of this growth is critical, to ensure broader, equitable positive impacts for the industry and local communities.
Targeted future growth will be measured through higher quality visitor experiences, increased economic value addition, and tangible, measurable improvements to community welfare.
Serving As The Official Tourism Reference Through 2027
The Indonesia Tourism Outlook 2026/2027 is intended to strengthen the evidence base for government policy formulation. Concurrently, this document will act as a strategic planning reference for all national tourism industry operators.
This outlook is also structured to reinforce cross-sectoral cooperation. The overarching goal is to build an Indonesian tourism industry that delivers higher quality growth, while becoming more resilient, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable.
The document launch was timed to coincide with World Tourism Day commemorations on 27 September. This international milestone provides an opportunity to review the tourism sector's progress, while preparing adaptive strategies for the continuously evolving global landscape.
“United in the spirit of World Tourism Day, may this document strengthen our policy foundations, become a trusted reference for industry players, and bind us all in closer collaboration,” concluded the Tourism Minister.
The Indonesia Tourism Outlook 2026/2027 is far more than a standard periodic tourism status report.
This document is positioned as a shared collective compass for governments, industry operators, academics, local communities, and the general public to interpret ongoing global changes and map out the development direction for Indonesian tourism towards 2027.
