FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026: Thailand Have Reached the Final, Will Indonesia or Malaysia Become Their Opponent?

Thailand has secured a confirmed spot in the final of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. Their 2-0 victory over Vietnam in the second Group B fixture at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium, Bandung Regency, West Java on Tuesday evening means Thailand will only await the Group A champions as their opponent for the tournament title match.

Thailand played with clinical efficiency throughout the full match. Two goals from Sarach Yooyen and Otton Chaiyaphon delivered the War Elephants their second consecutive win, while also locking them into first place in Group B.

Thailand have accumulated 6 points from two matches. Vietnam sits in second position with 3 points, while the Philippines and Pakistan remain in the running for the remaining positions below them.

Thailand took the lead just 10 minutes into the match. A loose ball right outside Vietnam's defensive line was not cleared properly. With open space, Yooyen fired a powerful shot from approximately 20 meters out.

His strike travelled with too much pace for Vietnam Goalkeeper Le Giang Patrik to stop. Thailand went ahead 1-0.

After taking the lead, Thailand reduced their pressing intensity slightly. Vietnam attempted to ramp up attacking play to search for an equaliser, but their efforts did not manage to properly test Thailand goalkeeper Saranon Anuin.

Vietnam briefly celebrated a goal in the 37th minute. Tai Loc found the back of Thailand's net after latching onto a through pass from Vo Hoang Minh Khoa.

However, the goal was disallowed, as Tai Loc was already in an offside position when he received the pass. Thailand maintained their lead going into the half-time break.

Vietnam Press Thailand's Defence

Vietnam played with far greater aggression after the interval. Wave after wave of attacks were directed at Thailand's backline, but the Thai defensive unit held strong with disciplined positioning.

Thailand created their clearest chance in the 80th minute. Oussama Thiangkham delivered a cross that Peeradol Chamrasamee headed on target, only for the Vietnamese goalkeeper to pull off a save to keep his side's hopes alive.

Vietnam cranked up pressure during the final 10 minutes of regular time. They probed repeatedly looking for gaps in Thailand's defensive line, but the War Elephants' compact backline repelled every attempt.

Instead, Thailand landed the decisive final blow in the 3rd minute of stoppage time. Otton Chaiyaphon scored Thailand's second goal, finishing off a through ball supplied by Yodsangwal.

This 2-0 result confirmed Thailand's top place finish in Group B.

Thailand Await Group A Winners

The two match results put Thailand on 6 total points. Before defeating Vietnam, they opened the tournament with a dominant 4-0 rout of Pakistan on the first matchday.

Vietnam had started the tournament with a 1-0 win against the Philippines, before falling to Thailand in their second fixture.

With their final ticket already secured, Thailand will now await the outcome of the Group A standings. The Group A champions will face Thailand in the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup final match.

The Group A title race remains open between Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. Indonesia and Malaysia both hold 4 points following their 0-0 draw, while Singapore currently sits on 3 points.

The final round of Group A fixtures will decide the final standings. Indonesia will face Bangladesh, while Malaysia will play Singapore.

So far in the tournament, Thailand have recorded 6 points from two matches, scored 6 total goals, and are yet to concede a single goal.
