Cristiano Ronaldo has departed the Portugal national team training camp ahead of their 2026/27 UEFA Nations League fixture against Denmark. The national side's captain made this decision after missing three consecutive training sessions.
Ronaldo's exit comes as Portugal prepare to face Denmark at Copenhagen's Parken Stadium. This Nations League fixture is scheduled to kick off in the early hours of Friday 2 October, Western Indonesian Time.
Ronaldo announced his decision via his Instagram account on Thursday. He confirmed he had held discussions with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation prior to choosing to leave the training camp.

"Following the national team head coach's press conference, and after speaking with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have taken the decision to leave the national team training camp," Ronaldo posted to his official Instagram on Thursday.
Despite leaving the squad, Ronaldo issued his full support for his teammates ahead of the Denmark match. He has not yet publicly shared the full reasoning behind his decision.
Ronaldo stated he will disclose full details of the situation only when he considers the time appropriate. This has left the motive for his departure as a major focal point of attention in the build-up to Portugal's upcoming fixture.
"When the time comes, I will share the full truth with every Portuguese citizen regarding the reasons that led me to leave this national team - a side I have always defended with total dedication," he added.
Scrutiny around Ronaldo began mounting after Portugal's recent run of matches. He started in Portugal's 1-0 Nations League win over Wales, but remained an unused substitute for the team's subsequent 2-1 victory against Norway.
After the Norway fixture concluded in Oslo, Ronaldo was observed walking directly down the players tunnel immediately after full time and heading straight to the away dressing rooms. He failed to appear for Portugal's training session the following day.
According to Euronews reporting, Ronaldo held private talks with head coach Jorge Jesus on Tuesday evening. The meeting is understood to have been an attempt to defuse rising tensions within the Portugal squad.
Yet the situation was not resolved. Ronaldo again did not attend team training the next day, before leaving Parken Stadium in an official vehicle belonging to the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF).
Ronaldo departed the grounds at the point that almost all Portugal squad members had already taken to the pitch for training. Only Francisco Conceicao missed the session, who was sidelined with Injury.
Ronaldo's decision to leave camp was made just minutes after Jorge Jesus finished his official pre-match press conference. Earlier in that same press briefing, Jesus had confirmed Ronaldo was expected to take part in that day's training.
Jesus had previously explained Ronaldo's absence from training the prior day by stating the 41 year old captain had only completed separate indoor gym work that day. Ultimately however, Ronaldo failed to report for training once again, and elected to exit the Portugal team base entirely.
Portugal must now prepare for their fixture against Denmark without their long serving captain, who also remains the all-time top goalscorer in the nation's history.
