MotoGP Mandalika does not only host on-track competition, it also generates economic impact for Indonesia. Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir stated that the economic output from holding MotoGP Mandalika has reached nearly IDR 5 trillion.

"This MotoGP is not a trivial event. This is real, its economic impact reaches almost 5 trillion Rupiah," Erick stated during the launch of the book MotoGP Mandalika 2025: Economic Acceleration, National Image, and Tourism held at Bappenas headquarters, Jakarta on Wednesday.

Erick confirmed this result can still be improved. The government intends for the economic benefits of MotoGP events to not remain concentrated only around the circuit perimeter, but to be felt across wider communities.

MotoGP Mandalika is a clear demonstration of how sports can evolve into an integrated part of the tourism industry.

The arrival of spectators, international tourists, Business operators and all supporting event activities creates impacts that extend far beyond the Motorsport competition itself.

"This MotoGP event has proven to be a high-impact initiative, both on national level and for the local region," Erick added.

The government has set an increased attendance target. Higher visitor numbers are expected to further boost economic circulation generated throughout the MotoGP Mandalika event period.

"We will keep improving this, for this year we are targeting 145,000 total attendees," he said.

Erick confirmed the Ministry of Youth and Sports continues coordinated work with relevant government agencies to develop Sports Tourism. He noted Indonesia holds massive untapped potential to position international sporting events as entry gateways for inbound tourists.

Growth of Sport Tourism is also aligned with national economic growth targets. Erick explained this effort forms part of support for President Prabowo Subianto's agenda to push national economic growth up to 8 percent.

"We will maximise every possible potential for this nation. One way we do this is through coordination, proper execution, and delivering high-impact programs for Sport Tourism," he stated.

Wide growth opportunities remain open for Indonesia. Erick previously noted the global Sport Tourism market is valued at approximately IDR 9,500 trillion, while Indonesia's current market share remains very small relative to this total potential.

"This sector holds extraordinary, underrecognized potential. To put this in context: the global sports industry is currently worth around 8,000 trillion Rupiah, while the global sport tourism market alone reaches 9,500 trillion Rupiah. These are enormous figures," Erick said.

Erick revealed Indonesia currently only captures around IDR 39 trillion, equal to just 0.5% of the total global sport tourism Market Value. This figure illustrates the massive untapped growth room for this sector domestically.

According to Erick, this potential must be developed more systematically. The more international sporting events that can be integrated with local tourism and economic activities, the wider the benefits will spread across different industry sectors.

MotoGP Mandalika operates as one of the flagship platforms for this national strategy. With nearly IDR 5 trillion in generated economic impact and a 145,000 visitor target, this world-class Motorcycle Racing event is no longer only about who sets the fastest lap on track. It is now also measured by how much tangible benefit it can deliver for Indonesia's economy and tourism sector.
