Indonesia recorded growth in Foreign Tourist arrivals in August 2026. Among all visitor origin countries, Malaysia, Australia, and China stood as the three largest markets contributing the highest number of arrivals to Indonesia.

Data from Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that Malaysian tourists accounted for 18.52 percent of all foreign visitor arrivals in August 2026. Australia ranked second, followed by China.

"The highest volume of foreign arrivals came from travellers holding Malaysian passports at 18.52%, followed by Australia at 10.75%, then China at 10.16%," stated Ateng Hartono, BPS Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics, during an official press briefing.

While these three markets form the backbone of Indonesia's foreign visitor arrivals, their performance trends are not aligned. On a month-on-month basis, arrivals from Malaysia and China recorded growth. In contrast, Australian Tourist arrivals saw a decline over the same period.

"For month-to-month performance, foreign travellers holding Malaysian and Chinese passports posted increased arrivals. Meanwhile, visitors holding Australian passports recorded a drop," Hartono added.

This monthly decline in Tourist Arrivals from Australia does not automatically signal a weakening market. When compared against August of the prior year, all three countries registered positive year-on-year arrival growth.

In total, Indonesia received 1.60 million Foreign Tourist arrivals during August 2026. This figure represents a 4.89% increase from the previous month, and 6.27% growth compared to the same period one year prior.

Positive growth was also recorded across the first 8 months of 2026. Between January and August, total foreign arrivals reached 10.58 million, marking a 5.38% rise over the equivalent period in the previous year.

Regarding entry points, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport remained one of the primary gateways for international visitors. Bali continues to act as a major tourism draw for travellers worldwide, including the Australian market.

This data illustrates the diverse profile of Indonesia's 2026 International Tourism market. Malaysia leads by total arrival volume, Australia remains a high-priority market centred around Bali, while China demonstrates consistent both monthly and annual growth momentum.

With arrival volumes continuing to climb through August, the Malaysian, Australian and Chinese markets represent critical pillars of Indonesia's tourism industry performance. These three markets will act as key indicators to track national tourism growth trajectory for the remainder of 2026.
