Shifting Holiday Trends among Chinese Tourists are opening new opportunities for Indonesia's tourism industry. Amid rising overseas travel interest, Indonesia has entered the list of sought-after destinations for the Long Holiday 2026 Golden Week.

Citing Kyodo News, Chinese travel agency Tuniu placed Indonesia on its list of popular international destinations alongside Turkey and South Korea. Notably, Japan — previously one of the most favoured travel spots — no longer holds a top position on this ranking.

Golden Week is China's National Holiday period held annually from 1–7 October. This year, the holiday window falls adjacent to the Mid-Autumn Festival, allowing many travellers to extend their time off.

This dynamic has further boosted international travel demand. Travel Weekly Asia reported that International Flight bookings for the Golden Week period rose 22.5 percent year-on-year, based on available data compiled as of 24 September 2026.

For Indonesia, this shift presents critical momentum to strengthen the appeal of its Tourism Destinations for Chinese visitors. Bali for instance, offers a combination of beaches, culture, cuisine and accommodation facilities that caters to travellers with varied holiday preferences.

However this opportunity is not limited exclusively to Bali. Other destinations across Indonesia also stand to gain traction, provided they can deliver unique local experiences, adequate transport access, and services aligned with the needs of International Tourists.

Growing Interest Towards Indonesia

Positive signals are also reflected in accommodation search data. Digital travel platform Agoda reported in July 2026 that China recorded the highest growth in travel interest towards Indonesia out of all international visitor markets for the first half of this year.

Based on accommodation searches between January and June 2026, interest from Chinese Tourists for Indonesia grew 44 percent compared to the same period in 2025. This also marks the first time China has entered the top 5 highest-interest source markets for Indonesian accommodation in the platform's reporting.

That said, accommodation search metrics are distinct from actual confirmed tourist arrival figures. Rising search interest indicates market potential, but does not automatically translate to an equivalent percentage increase in real visitor numbers.

Travellers Remain Mobile, But Adopt More Cautious Spending

This market opportunity must also be viewed alongside shifting spending behaviour among Chinese tourists. Reuters reported on 9 October 2026 that average per-person spending for domestic trips during Golden Week fell 1.9 percent to 893.92 Yuan, approximately USD 133.51.

This marks the lowest recorded figure in four years, even as overseas travel volumes see an uptick. One factor driving this trend is the ability for travellers to take longer breaks by combining multiple public holiday periods.

This trend demonstrates that high travel demand does not always correspond with higher per-visitor spending. Travellers remain eager to seek new experiences, but are becoming far more selective when allocating budgets, choosing accommodation, and planning trip activities.

For Indonesian Tourism stakeholders, understanding these priorities is critical. Offering flexible travel packages, accommodation options across all price brackets, streamlined booking processes and authentic local experiences will form key parts of an effective strategy to attract this Chinese market.

Momentum To Strengthen Indonesia's Tourism Competitiveness

Shifting destination preferences during Golden Week and rising accommodation search interest represent a significant opportunity for Indonesia. However this momentum must be followed up with targeted strategy to convert traveller interest into actual inbound visits.

Beyond promotional efforts, factors including flight connectivity, accessible information, service quality and destination readiness will also determine how Indonesia competes against other Asian travel destinations.

Indonesia possesses unique natural and cultural assets that set it apart from competitors. The core challenge lies in delivering tourism experiences that match market expectations, while also sustaining destination quality to maintain long term appeal.

With the right approach, this evolving travel trend among Chinese tourists can become a valuable opportunity for Indonesia to expand its International Tourism reach, and cement its position as a leading preferred travel destination across Asia.
