Portugal secured their spot in the Quarter Finals of the UEFA Nations League after defeating Norway 2-1 at Dragao Stadium, Porto, on Monday, 5 October 2026.

This result also preserves Portugal's perfect record in Group A4. The Selecao have locked 12 points from four matches, confirming their knockout stage qualification even with two group fixtures still remaining.

Norway actually shocked the hosts first. Kristoffer Ajer put the away side ahead in the 36th minute after capitalising on a dead ball situation.

Martin Odegaard initiated this opening goal. The Norwegian captain delivered a free kick from near the halfway line straight to Ajer on the right flank.

Ajer then struck using the outside of his right boot. The ball curled into the top corner of Diogo Costa's goal, handing Norway a 1-0 lead.

Portugal only needed three minutes to respond. Joao Cancelo registered his name on the scoresheet with a fierce right-footed strike.

This goal originated from Nuno Mendes' throw-in that found Cancelo. The Portuguese defender unleashed an immediate shot which Egil Selvik failed to block, bringing the score to 1-1.

Before Norway took the lead, Portugal had actually dominated chance creation. Francisco Conceicao attempted to beat opposition defenders with an individual run, before his advance was successfully halted.

Vitinha also fired an attempt from outside the penalty box, though the shot lacked enough power to trouble Selvik.

Another opportunity came for Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese midfielder evaded Norwegian markers before striking from the edge of the box, an effort that Selvik was still able to parry away.

Goncalo Ramos also posed a threat after breaking into the penalty area, but his final finish was once again denied by Norway's Goalkeeper.

Entering the second half, Portugal continued pushing for a second goal. Cancelo tested Selvik again with a long range shot, forcing the keeper into a critical save to protect his goal.

Norway did not lack their own chances. Patrick Berg played a through ball that found Erling Haaland, but the Manchester City striker failed to direct his shot on target.

Portugal received another opening through Ruben Neves. Fernandes' free kick deflected off Ajer and fell to Neves, though the Portuguese midfielder's attempt sailed over the crossbar.

Portugal's pressure finally paid off in the 79th minute. Vitinha floated a cross towards Joao Felix who was positioned on the right side of the penalty box.

Felix then played a low square ball across the face of goal. Goncalo Ramos was perfectly placed to finish the chance with a simple touch, Putting Portugal 2-1 ahead.

Portugal faced a tougher end to the match when Francisco Conceicao received his second yellow card. The Selecao were forced to play the final five minutes of normal time with 10 men.

Despite being down a player, Portugal successfully protected their lead. The Selecao defence operated with full discipline to repel Norway's late pressure until the match concluded.

These three points solidify Portugal at the top of Group A4 with 12 points from four matches. They hold a six point gap over second-placed Denmark.

Norway and Wales sit in the bottom two positions of the group, both having collected 3 points each.
