Atletico Madrid have the opportunity to build momentum in the Champions League as they host Manchester United at the Metropolitano Stadium. Both sides enter this fixture in contrasting form. While the Madrid club are enjoying a positive run in their domestic league, United are still struggling to find consistency under manager Michael Carrick.

Following their opening Champions League defeat to Liverpool, Atletico have been flawless in La Liga, picking up four consecutive wins either side of the international break. This run has lifted the Spanish capital side to 2nd place in the league table, just behind defending champions Barcelona.

This form serves as crucial preparation for Diego Simeone's squad ahead of facing Manchester United. Atletico also carry strong European pedigree, having reached the Champions League semi-finals last season. They knocked out Barcelona in the quarter-final stage before being eliminated by Arsenal.

Across the 2025/2026 season, Atletico have won five out of their eight Champions League home matches, scoring a total of 22 goals. However, the defensive solidity that long defined Simeone's teams has started to show vulnerabilities.

Since the start of 2024, Atletico have conceded goals in 14 out of their 15 home European fixtures. Their only clean sheet during this period came in a 1-0 derby victory over Real Madrid back in March 2025.

Prior to this slump, Atletico had recorded 31 clean sheets from 49 Champions League matches at the Metropolitano under Simeone, a rate of approximately 63%. Tactical shifts implemented by the manager have altered the team's playing identity over recent seasons.

Under the new Champions League format, Atletico have been drawn repeatedly against English opposition. Five of their last seven fixtures have been against Premier League sides, including last month's 2-1 away defeat at Liverpool. From these five matches, Atletico have only secured one win.

Manchester United Arrive Under Heavy Pressure

In stark contrast to Atletico, Manchester United continue to battle consistency issues. The Red Devils have collected just 6 points from their opening 6 Premier League matches this campaign. This marks their worst league start to a season since 1986, when they accumulated only 4 points at the same stage.

Last weekend's 1-1 home draw against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford has only increased the pressure on the club. United had taken the lead through Bryan Mbeumo, but failed to hold on as Tottenham grabbed an injury time equaliser.

Tottenham had even looked the more likely side to open the scoring before Mbeumo put the hosts ahead. Despite being reduced to 10 men following Rodrigo Bentancur's red card, the visitors managed to absorb all pressure and leave with a point.

This result once again highlighted United's struggles against sides playing with a numerical disadvantage. In recent fixtures they have also failed to capitalise on extra man advantages against Everton and Manchester City.

Manchester United posted an expected goals (xG) figure of just 0.77 against Tottenham, reflecting the lack of quality scoring chances they were able to create.

Michael Carrick's position is coming under increasing scrutiny. Across all competitions, United have won just two out of eight matches under his management: victories against newly promoted Ipswich Town, and Azerbaijani side Sabah in their opening Champions League fixture.

United did begin their Champions League campaign with an emphatic 4-0 home win over Sabah last month. However, their poor domestic form has cast major doubt over their ability to carry this momentum into matches against stronger opposition.

United are attempting to start their Champions League group stage with back-to-back wins. This is a feat they have only achieved twice since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Benjamin Sesko Ruled Out, Matheus Cunha Set To Lead The Line

Manchester United will travel to Madrid without striker Benjamin Sesko, who is once again sidelined with fitness issues. This is a major blow for United: Sesko has scored 5 goals in his last 7 Champions League starts.

The striker also previously scored at the Metropolitano Stadium during his time with RB Leipzig two years ago.

In his absence, United are expected to hand the starting striker role to Matheus Cunha - a player very familiar to Atletico supporters. Cunha represented the Spanish club between 2021 and 2023, making 54 appearances and scoring 7 goals during his spell there.

For the hosts, Julian Alvarez is the player Manchester United will need to watch most closely. The Argentine forward spent 2022 to 2024 at Manchester City, and experienced first hand the intensity of the Manchester Derby against United.

Alvarez won three Premier League derbies against United, before City were defeated in the 2024 FA Cup Final - which proved to be his final match for the club before his transfer to Atletico.

Despite a difficult pre-season, Alvarez remains one of the most dangerous threats to United's defence. He has scored 17 goals in 26 Champions League appearances for Atletico, including 10 goals from just 13 home matches in the competition.

Alvarez is competing for a starting spot up front alongside Jonathan David and Alexander Sorloth. David started up front in Atletico's 2-1 league win over Alavés on Saturday, meaning Simeone's final attacking selection will be closely watched.

Head To Head Record: Atletico Madrid vs Manchester United

Manchester United hold a strong historical record against Spanish opposition. They have lost just once in their last 11 matches against La Liga sides, recording seven wins and three draws in that run.

However this record has not translated to matches against Atletico specifically. The Red Devils are yet to record a single competitive victory over Atletico Madrid, with two draws and two defeats from their previous meetings.

The last official competitive meeting between the sides came in the 2022 Champions League Round of 16. After a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Madrid, Atletico progressed thanks to a Renan Lodi goal at Old Trafford.

The two clubs have each claimed one friendly win since then. In their most recent meeting back in early August, United ran out 2-1 winners, with two goals from Bryan Mbeumo cancelling out Arnau Ortiz's opener.

That pre-season friendly result will carry little weight heading into this competitive fixture however. Atletico hold clear domestic momentum, while United are still searching for improved performances.

Atletico Madrid vs Manchester United Match Prediction

Opta supercomputer modelling ranks Atletico Madrid as clear favourites for this fixture. Based on 10,000 pre-match simulations, Atletico hold a 46% chance of securing all three points.

By comparison, Manchester United are given only a 29.7% probability of victory. There is a 24.3% chance the match finishes level, matching the tight, closely fought nature of the sides' last meeting in Madrid four years prior.

Home advantage and their good La Liga form work in Atletico's favour. However they will need to address their recent defensive inconsistency, particularly against counter attacks and United's forward line.

For Manchester United, this match represents a critical test for Michael Carrick. The side will need a major improvement in attacking creativity and finishing if they are to halt their poor run and claim a statement result in the Champions League.
