Atletico Madrid claimed victory in their second Champions League group stage fixture, beating Manchester United 2-0 at the Metropolitano Stadium, Madrid on Wednesday WIB. Goals from Pablo Barrios and Ademola Lookman secured all three points for Diego Simeone's squad, while Leny Yoro's red card deepened the Red Devils' disappointing night.

Atletico applied pressure right from kickoff. Only 53 seconds had elapsed when Pablo Barrios put the home side ahead after finishing off a supply from Alex Baena. This lightning opening goal forced Manchester United to immediately adjust their game approach.

United tried to respond by building attacking sequences to hunt for an equaliser. However, all of their advances were halted before they could break into Atletico's penalty box. The home defence operated with sharp discipline to protect their lead.

Atletico found the United net once again late in the first half through Johnny Cardoso. This goal was disallowed by the referee for a handball offence however, leaving Atletico with a 1-0 advantage heading into half time.

Upon the start of the second half, Manchester United lifted their ball possession rate and attempted to push against the home defence. They created several dangerous scenarios inside Atletico's defensive zone, but struggled to convert any of these chances into goals.

Leny Yoro's Red Card Changed The Course Of The Match

Manchester United's hopes of closing the deficit suffered a heavy blow in the 74th minute. Young defender Leny Yoro was shown a straight red card by the referee following a foul.

Being reduced to ten players made it far harder for United to chase an equalising goal. Atletico immediately capitalised on this situation by launching much more effective attacks, regularly finding open space behind the visiting backline.

Five minutes after Yoro was dismissed, Atletico doubled their lead via Ademola Lookman. Built from a fast counter attack, Lookman exploited the gaps in United's outnumbered defence before firing an accurate finish past Goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

With this 79th minute goal, Atletico were able to control the match comfortably. In contrast, United faced an almost impossible task to turn the result around with their numerical disadvantage.

Michael Carrick's side continued to push to narrow the deficit for the remaining match time. Nevertheless, Atletico's rock solid backline shut down every single scoring attempt from the visitors.

The 2-0 scoreline stood until the final whistle. Atletico closed out the fixture with a convincing win, earned through Barrios' rapid opening goal and Lookman's second half strike.

This victory serves as critical momentum for Atletico as they continue competing in European competition. For Manchester United, this defeat in Madrid presents clear improvement work for Carrick, above all regarding defensive concentration levels.
