Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has issued a clarification after his public criticism of the club's management sparked controversy. The Argentine player admitted he spoke while angry and frustrated following the 0-2 defeat against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

Via Instagram Story, Martinez explained his comments stemmed from disappointment over the match result. He emphasized that his competitive drive and desire to win were the reasons behind the criticism he made.

“After the match, I spoke out of anger and frustration because we did not get the result we wanted. People who know me understand how I play: with passion, commitment, and an enormous will to win,” Martinez wrote on his Instagram Story.

Martinez did not directly apologize for his remarks. Instead, he stated that his demands towards the club relate to the need for continuous improvement and squad strengthening in order to compete for trophies.

“When I spoke about wanting more, what I meant is that all of us must have ambition as part of this club. To keep improving, become stronger, and have everything required to compete at the highest level,” he wrote.

Martinez Highlights Manchester United Investment And Management Role

This controversy began after Manchester United lost 0-2 to Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium. This result extended the Red Devils' winless run to five matches across all competitions.

In a post-match interview with Amazon Prime Video, Martinez openly called on Manchester United's management to sign additional players.

He stated the club needs to increase investment to compete with rival teams that are also strengthening their squads.

“We had an incredible season last year, and now we expect more from the club hierarchy. We need more players to compete, because many other teams are also bringing in plenty of new signings,” Martinez stated.

The Argentine defender specifically pointed out the role of Technical Director Jason Wilcox in the squad building process. According to him, the club's ambition must be reflected in investment decisions and squad development.

“I expect more investment. One hundred percent. I expect more from our technical director,” he added.

Martinez also noted that responsibility for Manchester United's performance should not fall solely on the coach and players. He questioned the recurring approach of replacing the head coach as the default solution whenever the team fails to deliver expected results.

"You can't just keep changing, changing, changing the coach. What about the other parts of the club?" he remarked.

These statements drew significant attention as they targeted the club's off-pitch structure. Amid the poor run of results, Martinez is calling for a full evaluation, including scrutiny of management decisions regarding building a competitive squad.

Martinez's Future Under Scrutiny

Following the criticism, reports have emerged regarding potential disciplinary action against Martinez. Sky Sports has reported that the defender's future at Manchester United is now uncertain.

Additionally, one teammate was reported to have confronted Martinez during the return flight from Spain. However, these reports have not confirmed any official club decision regarding sanctions or the 28-year-old player's future.

In his clarification statement, Martinez sought to emphasize that his criticism did not mean he has lost faith in the team. Instead, he called for all parts of the club to remain united and work towards turning the situation around.

“This is the standard we must hold ourselves to, starting with me first. I know that above all, we as players are the ones who must deliver results, and I place myself at the very front of this responsibility,” he stated.

Martinez Remains Committed To Michael Carrick

Martinez expressed his support for his teammates, Manager Michael Carrick, and everyone working to progress Manchester United. He stated that collective cooperation and commitment are the path to restore the club to top level competition.

“I believe in my teammates, our manager, and every single person working to move this club forward. I am convinced that the way forward is to keep working together, with ambition and dedication,” he wrote.

Manchester United's next fixture is an away match against Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday 18 October.

“My goal has never changed since day one: to win, compete at the highest level, and give everything for the badge of this club,” he wrote.
