Jon Rahm has made a major decision to end his association with LIV Golf. The Spanish golfer is reportedly willing to waive approximately £75 million, or around 100 million US dollars, in owed payments as part of a separation agreement to exit the financially troubled golf league.

Rahm's decision marks the latest development for LIV Golf, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States back in September. This move came after Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) withdrew billions of dollars in financial backing for the tour.

When filing for bankruptcy protection, LIV Golf listed Jon Rahm as the organisation's largest unsecured creditor. The league still held an outstanding payment obligation of $7.4 million, approximately £5.5 million, owed to Rahm solely for the remainder of the 2026 season.

ESPN reports that Rahm's total outstanding payment claim amounted to roughly $100 million / £75 million. This sum represented the remaining portion of the $300 million (£222 million) contract he signed when he left the PGA Tour to join LIV Golf in December 2023.

Jon Rahm Rejects LIV Golf Funding Proposal Terms

Amidst its financial crisis, LIV Golf has attempted to continue operations via a restructuring plan codenamed LIV 2.0. Under this plan, the league was set to secure up to $300 million in financing from BC Partners Credit to sustain operations.

However, Rahm deemed the conditions attached to this restructuring plan unacceptable. Instead, he chose to forfeit his entire payment claim in order to fully sever all financial ties with LIV Golf.

This exit agreement was structured to allow Rahm a clean break from the league. By waiving all rights to the owed funds, Rahm opted for an unencumbered exit rather than remaining entangled in the organisation's ongoing financial proceedings.

As part of the settlement, Rahm will retain full rights to the Legion XIII brand, the LIV Golf team he captained. However, he is prohibited from using this team name to enter a squad in TGL, the high-tech indoor golf league founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

Jon Rahm Does Not Follow Brooks Koepka's Return Path

Rahm was one of the highest profile players to defect from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf, with his 2023 move drawing massive global attention due to his status as one of the world's elite golfers.

Multiple LIV players have since returned to the PGA Tour, most notably Brooks Koepka. In December, the PGA Tour adjusted its rules to allow the five-time major Champion re-entry, subject to meeting specified requirements and serving agreed disciplinary sanctions.

Rahm has not taken this same route. He remained bound by his long-term LIV Golf contract until he reached a separate agreement with the DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) in May this year.

This arrangement allowed Rahm to retain his DP World Tour membership, and crucially, preserve his eligibility to compete in next year's Ryder Cup.

This was a critical priority for Rahm: while LIV Golf players face an automatic 12-month suspension from the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour remains a valid pathway for players to earn PGA Tour status.

Currently, the top 10 ranked players on the DP World Tour receive automatic PGA Tour membership. This route remains one of the only available paths for players wishing to retain access to golf's biggest major tournaments.

Despite the ongoing contract and financial turmoil surrounding LIV Golf, Rahm has maintained strong on-course form. In August this year, he secured his third consecutive LIV Golf season title.

Rahm had previously stated he had no regrets over joining LIV Golf. However, his decision to walk away from the estimated $100 million in owed payments formally closes this chapter of his career with the breakaway league. (BBC)
