Comeback After Losing The Opening Game
The match was tightly contested right from the first set. Jonatan and Ubed traded points evenly until the scores were level at 9-9, after which Jonatan took control to build a 12-9 lead.
Ubed briefly closed the gap to just one point at 14-15. However Jonatan stretched his advantage once again, reaching game point at 20-14 before closing the first game 21-16.
Entering the second game, Ubed switched to more aggressive play, building an 8-4 lead before carrying that advantage into the mid-match interval at 11-6. Jonatan attempted to narrow the deficit to 13-14, but Ubed held firm to secure the second game 21-17.
Ubed explained that adjusting the match tempo was the key to his turnaround after dropping the first set, as he deliberately increased the pace of play for the second game.
The deciding final game presented its own unique challenges for Ubed. He opened with an early 5-0 lead, only for Jonatan to fight back and level the scores first at 8-8, then again at 11-11.
Ubed regained his momentum shortly after, closing the third game 21-17 and knocking Jonatan out of the tournament in the first round.
Despite defeating this experienced senior player, Ubed acknowledged he still has improvements to make to maintain consistent performance.
"I still need to prove my consistency, my form still fluctuates up and down right now," Ubed concluded.
Next, Ubed will face Japanese men's singles shuttler Koki Watanabe in the second round of the 2026 French Open. Their match will be held at Grand Paris Arena on Thursday, 22 October 2026.
