Lando Norris Wins 2026 Dutch Grand Prix, Verstappen Crashes

IndonesiaTravelSport.com - Lando Norris claimed victory at the 2026 Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix, securing the win in a dramatic race at Zandvoort Circuit on Sunday 23 August 2026. The McLaren driver beat Mercedes pairing Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, while Max Verstappen failed to finish after crashing on the opening lap of the race.

Norris started the grand prix from pole position and held his lead cleanly off the start line. Behind him, Antonelli successfully overtook Russell to claim second position early on.

However, the race was completely upended on the very first lap. Verstappen, who had started from seventh on the grid, lost rear end control of his Red Bull while exiting the final corner. One wheel of his car drifted over the track boundary white line before the vehicle spun violently and collided with the circuit barrier.

Verstappen's car suffered severe damage, with debris scattered across the racing line. This incident triggered an immediate red flag to halt the race. Verstappen was able to exit his wrecked car without sustaining any injuries.

Once the track was fully cleared, racing resumed with a standing restart on Lap 5. Antonelli made a perfect launch, overtaking Norris immediately at Turn 1 to take over the race lead.

Antonelli would go on to lead the vast majority of the grand prix. Norris maintained consistent pressure from behind, as McLaren ran a strategy that saw them delay their pit stop far longer than the Mercedes cars.

This strategy ultimately delivered results. On much fresher rubber following his pit stop, Norris began rapidly closing the gap to Antonelli, before finally retaking the lead of the race with 18 laps remaining.

The battle intensified further when a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) was deployed after Esteban Ocon's car stopped stranded on track. Antonelli pitted for new soft compound tyres, while both Norris and Russell ahead of him elected to stay out on circuit.

Antonelli rejoined the race behind Russell. Mercedes team management then issued an order for Russell to yield position to his teammate, as Antonelli held a clear pace advantage on his newer tyres. Russell complied with the team instruction.

Even with the clear track, Antonelli was unable to close down Norris. The British driver crossed the chequered flag after 72 completed laps, taking victory by a margin of 11.536 seconds over Antonelli. Russell finished third, 15.906 seconds behind the race winner.

Lewis Hamilton took fourth place for Ferrari, followed by his teammate Charles Leclerc in fifth position. Oscar Piastri brought the second McLaren car home in sixth place.

Liam Lawson was the only Red Bull driver to finish the grand prix. He classified seventh, despite receiving a 10 second time penalty for a yellow flag infraction during the race.

Nico Hulkenberg finished eighth for Audi, Fernando Alonso took ninth position for Aston Martin, while Pierre Gasly rounded out the championship points scoring top ten for Alpine.

This win marks Norris' second consecutive grand prix victory, following his success at the preceding Hungarian Grand Prix. The Zandvoort result keeps Norris firmly in contention for the drivers' championship title, though Antonelli still holds the lead in the season standings.

For Verstappen, this retirement marked a bitterly disappointing end to his home grand prix. The Dutch driver did not even complete one full racing lap before his crash ended his event.

The 2026 Dutch Grand Prix is also the final scheduled Formula 1 round to be hosted at Zandvoort. This circuit returned to the F1 calendar in 2021 after a 36 year absence, and had become famous for having one of the most electric atmospheres on the entire season schedule, driven overwhelmingly by the huge local support for Max Verstappen.
