Defeating Thailand on their home ground, Vietnam moves ever closer to the 2026 AFF Cup trophy.

Vietnam moved one step closer to claiming the 2026 AFF Cup title after securing a 2-0 victory over Thailand in the first leg of the final at Rajamangala Stadium, Bangkok. Goals from Nguyen Hai Long and Nguyen Quang Hai have put Vietnam in a commanding position ahead of the return leg at My Dinh Stadium, Hanoi on Wednesday, 26 August 2026.

With this two-goal cushion, Vietnam only requires a draw to confirm their championship. On the other side, Thailand must win by a minimum three-goal margin if they are to overturn the tie and lift the trophy.

Vietnam and Thailand Exchange Attacking Threats

The match remained tightly contested from the very first whistle. Vietnam created the first clear opportunity through Nguyen Xuan Son, but his effort was safely collected by Thailand goalkeeper Kampon Phatomakkakul.

Thailand responded immediately with an attempt from Teerasak Poeiphimai, which was successfully blocked by Vietnam's defensive line.

As the second half commenced, Vietnam continued to push forward. Pham Xuan Manh got on the end of a cross to send a header goalwards, but his effort drifted wide of the target.

Thailand created their own opening soon after when Poeiphimai struck a right-footed shot, though it never posed a serious threat.

Nattapong Sayriya also had an attempt after receiving a laid-off pass from Seksan Ratree, which also failed to test the Vietnam defence.

Nguyen Hai Long Breaks The Deadlock

The goalless stalemate was finally broken in the 62nd minute. Collecting a through pass from Nguyen Dinh Bac, Nguyen Hai Long fired an accurate left-footed strike into the net.

After conceding, Thailand ramped up their pressure in search of an equaliser, only to concede a second goal shortly afterwards.

Just seven minutes after the opening goal, Vietnam doubled their advantage.

This time Nguyen Quang Hai registered his name on the scoresheet, finishing off a pass from Do Hoang Hen to extend the scoreline to 2-0 for Vietnam.

Thailand pushed desperately for a comeback goal for the remainder of the match, but no further goals were scored before the full-time whistle.

Daunting Task Awaits Thailand In Hanoi

The upcoming second leg at My Dinh Stadium gives Vietnam the chance to seal the title. Backed by a full home crowd, they only need to avoid losing by a two-goal margin to secure the trophy.

For Thailand by contrast, the mission is far more difficult. The War Elephants must record at least a three-goal victory to overturn the aggregate score and be crowned champions.

Vietnam remain unbeaten throughout their entire 2026 AFF Cup campaign, which included a dominant 3-0 group stage victory over the Indonesian national team.
