Two Own Goals by Thailand Secure Vietnam as 2026 AFF Cup Champions

Jakarta – Vietnam retained their 2026 ASEAN Championship (AFF Cup 2026) title after playing out a 2-2 draw against Thailand in the second final leg at My Dinh National Stadium, Hanoi. With this result, the Golden Star Warriors secured a 4-2 aggregate victory over Thailand.

Vietnam had already established a 2-0 advantage during the first leg at Rajamangala Stadium, Bangkok prior to this match.

With this additional title, Vietnam has now collected four AFF Cup trophies in their history, having successfully defended the crown they won at the 2024 tournament edition.

Thailand Took The Lead Twice

Thailand refused to surrender easily despite entering the match with a two-goal aggregate deficit. The War Elephants started the second leg aggressively, opening the scoring in the 12th minute.

Yotsakon Burapha struck a powerful shot after receiving a pass from Seksan Ratree, which Vietnam goalkeeper Le Giang Patrik was unable to stop. Thailand took a 1-0 lead.

Vietnam pushed for an equaliser. Nguyen Xuan Son came close to levelling the score with a header, but the effort only struck the goalpost.

Thailand created further chances through Kakana Khamyok and Wairs Choolthong, though no additional goals were registered before the first half concluded.

Thailand required two unanswered goals to overturn the aggregate scoreline.

Vietnam Equalises Via Own Goal

Early in the second half, Thailand were awarded a penalty and given an opportunity to extend their lead.

Kakana Khamyok stepped up as the penalty taker, but his shot flew high over Vietnam's crossbar.

This miss proved costly, as Vietnam levelled the match through an own goal in the 52nd minute. A loose ball from Do Hoang Hen's strike deflected off Chatchai Bootprom before crossing the line into Thailand's goal, bringing the score to 1-1.

Thailand pushed once again for victory, scoring again in the 85th minute.

Wanchai Jarunongkran finished a cross from the right flank to put Thailand back ahead 2-1.

Own Goal Secures Vietnam's Title

Drama unfolded in stoppage time. Still chasing a winning result that would turn the tie, Thailand attempted to hold their lead, only to concede another own goal.

In the 90+3rd minute, Wanchai Jarunongkran was once again at the centre of events. This time, he scored an own goal that allowed Vietnam to level the match at 2-2.

This draw confirmed Vietnam as champions, sealing their 4-2 aggregate victory.

Vietnam celebrated their triumph at the My Dinh Stadium.
