Mandalika International Circuit has received the green light to host MotoGP Indonesia 2026 after officially obtaining Grade A homologation from the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM). This approval is a critical milestone for the track located in Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, to once again host this world-class Motorsport event on 9–11 October 2026.

For Mandalika, this homologation is far more than just a certificate filed away behind event administration. This status confirms the circuit has met all FIM requirements to host rounds of the FIM Grand Prix World Championship, including the premier MotoGP class.

Put simply, eligibility to host the race requires full compliance across technical standards, safety infrastructure, and operational readiness.

Ananda Mikola, Chief Executive Officer of the Mandalika Grand Prix Association (MGPA), described the approval as a major milestone ahead of the Indonesian Grand Prix series.

"Securing FIM Grade A homologation is an important moment, and formal confirmation that the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit has met all required standards," stated Ananda in a press statement issued in Jakarta, after accompanying FIM inspectors on their circuit assessment.

What Does FIM Grade A Homologation Mean?

In international Motorcycle Racing, homologation is the official inspection and certification process to verify that a circuit meets all mandatory requirements for a specified racing category.

The Grade A license granted to Mandalika covers full eligibility to host FIM Grand Prix World Championship rounds. This license is valid only for the 2026 racing season, meaning it is not a permanent approval and will require subsequent re-evaluation.

The official approval was issued following FIM's final inspection conducted on 8 October 2026. The findings are formalised under Circuit License Number 1277, which records the track length at 4.301 metres with pole position positioned on the left hand side of the circuit.

For solo motorcycle racing classes including MotoGP, the license authorises a maximum grid of 32 riders for both practice sessions and full race rounds.

FIM inspections are not limited solely to track surface condition. Run-off areas for riders leaving the racing line, gravel beds, tyre barriers, track marking lines, pit lane facilities, and marshal post placements all form part of the assessment criteria.

Inspectors also evaluated lighting and LED display systems, track drainage, surface maintenance protocols, and long lap penalty zones.

Every one of these elements is critical to ensure safe race operation, and to enable proper incident response should an emergency or disruption occur during on-track sessions.

Safety Obligations Do Not End When Inspections Finish

Achieving Grade A homologation does not mark the end of the circuit operator's responsibilities. Track condition and all supporting infrastructure must be maintained continuously to FIM specifications: this includes keeping track verges clear of hazardous obstacles, maintaining gravel bed depth and consistency, and ensuring track markings remain clearly visible at all times.

Readiness for technical failures is also a core requirement. Backup safety equipment must be kept on hand at all times, while operational crews must be trained and capable of carrying out emergency interventions, repairs or replacement of damaged facilities without delay.

This means the standards verified during inspection must be upheld for the entire duration of the event, not just during the official inspection visit. citeturn510164view0

For the organisers of MotoGP Indonesia, this principle carries enormous weight. World championship level racing demands seamless coordination between circuit management, championship officials, track marshals and safety response teams.

The quality of an event is not judged solely on the on-track racing action, but also on the ability of all involved parties to operate professionally, and respond rapidly and appropriately to any incident.

Mandalika Prepares For 9-11 October Race Weekend

The homologation approval arrives just ahead of the 2026 Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia. Between 9 and 11 October, Mandalika will host rounds of the MotoGP, Moto2, Moto3 championships and the Idemitsu Moto4 Asia Cup.

With this official approval, the circuit now holds the formal licensed authority to host this FIM World Championship round for all approved racing categories.

For Indonesia, this recognition reinforces Mandalika's standing as a respected host venue for international motorsport.

That said, retaining FIM trust will require unbroken consistency: facilities must remain properly maintained, safety systems must be kept fully operational at all times, and every operational procedure must be executed strictly in line with official standards.
