The MotoGP Indonesia 2026 race weekend officially commenced on Friday at the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit, Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. Riders across Moto3, Moto2 and the premier MotoGP class began their competitive weekend with the first free practice session (FP1), using this running to dial in optimal bike setups ahead of all decisive later sessions.

Paddock operations formed a critical part of pre-track preparation for every team. Riders and mechanics carried out full bike readiness inspections, evaluated technical tuning parameters, and finalised approach strategies to suit the unique track characteristics of Mandalika Circuit.

As per official MotoGP scheduling, the day opened with Moto3 running between 09:00 and 09:35 WITA (Central Indonesia Time). Moto2 riders then took to the circuit for their session from 09:50 to 10:30 WITA.

The top MotoGP class completed their FP1 running from 10:45 until 11:30 WITA. This 45 minute window provided riders their first proper opportunity to assess motorcycle pace and acclimatise to track conditions before subsequent practice runs.

Title Battle Heats Up At Mandalika

Beneath the general on-track action, all focus fell upon championship contenders Jorge Martin and Marc Marquez. Competing for Aprilia Racing, Martin arrived in Indonesia holding the provisional championship lead with 333 total points.

Marc Marquez of Ducati Lenovo Team sat just 2 points behind on 331 points. This tiny margin means every single session run at Mandalika carries the potential to shift the outcome of the 2026 MotoGP World Championship fight.

Martin is aiming to defend his position at the top of the Standings. However Marquez travels to Indonesia carrying strong momentum, having taken victory in both the Sprint Race and main Grand Prix at the preceding Japanese round.

This head to head rivalry stands as one of the core attractions of the entire weekend. Martin will require consistent clean runs to hold his advantage, while Marquez holds a clear opportunity to pressure the championship leader with maximum results at Mandalika.

Mario Aji and Veda Pratama Carry Home Nation Hopes

Alongside the world title battle, the local crowd will direct their support towards home riders Mario Suryo Aji and Veda Ega Pratama. The pair will represent Indonesia competing across separate classes, in Moto2 and Moto3 respectively.

For Mario, racing in front of home supporters presents a chance to demonstrate his recent development while competing against international field. Veda will meanwhile use this round to test his ability against the fiercely competitive Moto3 grid.

The presence of these two local riders adds an extra layer of excitement for MotoGP Indonesia 2026. It is expected that the energy of the Mandalika crowd will provide them additional drive to secure their strongest possible results across the race weekend.

Schedule Progresses To Follow-Up Practice Sessions

Following the morning FP1 runs, riders returned to the circuit for additional practice sessions on Friday afternoon. Moto3 was scheduled to commence their afternoon running at 13:15 WITA, followed by Moto2 at 14:05 WITA and MotoGP at 15:00 WITA.

These practice sessions form a vital preparation stage ahead of qualifying and race day. Riders must lock in the correct combination of bike setup and consistent pace to secure a competitive starting grid position.

For the MotoGP class, the weekend will proceed through qualifying sessions and the Sprint Race before the main Grand Prix is held on Sunday 11 October. Every session provides riders the chance to improve lap times and trial race strategies.
