Indonesia vs Malaysia at the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup: John Herdman's Tactical Test

Indonesia and Malaysia will face off in the second match of Group A Division 1 of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK), Jakarta, on Monday evening (28/9/2026). The match is scheduled to kick off at 19.30 WIB.

This clash is far more than just a fixture competing for three points. Both Indonesia and Malaysia entered this tournament with opening wins, and this meeting carries a long-standing historic rivalry that always adds massive pride and high stakes to every encounter between the two sides.

Indonesia opened their tournament campaign with a 2-0 victory over Singapore. Ragnar Oratmangoen put Garuda ahead in the 13th minute, before Ole Romeny doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the 74th minute.

Meanwhile, Malaysia put on a more prolific attacking display as they beat Bangladesh 3-0. Arif Aiman Hanapi netted a brace in the 18th and 38th minutes, while Brazilian-born naturalised striker Bergson Da Silva scored the third goal in the 52nd minute.

These results leave both Malaysia and Indonesia level on three points. Malaysia currently sit top of Group A on goal difference, with Indonesia occupying second place.

However, the upcoming fixture at GBK will present an entirely different challenge for both sides.

Both teams have now observed each other's playing style from their opening matches. This means tactical preparation will become even more critical. Indonesia head coach John Herdman is expected to make adjustments to prevent Malaysia from easily reading Garuda's game plan.

Speaking on the show, Kurniawan - locally known as Bung Yuke - stated that Herdman needs to consider a different approach now that Malaysia have already analysed how Indonesia played against Singapore.

He also expressed hope that Garuda will replicate the intensity and bold attacking football they showed in their previous matches against Oman and Mozambique.

Rayhan Hannan and Egy Maulana Vikri were highlighted as two players who could provide extra energy if named in the starting line-up. Their off-ball movement can also be used to apply constant pressure and drain the stamina of Malaysian players.

That said, Malaysia carry very real threats that cannot be underestimated.

Bergson Da Silva scored on his international debut for Malaysia. FIFA has flagged the naturalised Brazilian striker as one of the players to watch following their win over Bangladesh.

Alongside Bergson, Arif Aiman also demonstrated his clinical finishing with two goals in the opening match. This means Indonesia's defensive line will need to account for multiple attacking threats rather than just one focal point.

Fellow Football Analyst Erwin Fitriansyah raised a separate concern: the finishing sharpness of Indonesia's forward line.

According to Fitriansyah, Mitchell Baker and Ole Romeny are viable options up front. However, any attacking aggression must be balanced with proper structure across the front, midfield and defensive lines.

This balance is critical, as Malaysia possess players that excel at exploiting open space whenever their opponents lose possession.

Notably, John Herdman himself has openly acknowledged the significance of this fixture. The Indonesia head coach revealed he has gained a full understanding of the scale of the Indonesia-Malaysia rivalry, after being reminded about it every single day by people around his team hotel. Herdman even compared the fixture to the famous Tyne-Wear Derby between Newcastle United and Sunderland.

At the same time, Herdman has warned his players against getting caught up in the atmosphere. He stated that while this derby match deserves full respect, Indonesia must stay focused, execute their game plan and give their full performance on the pitch.

All these factors are what make the upcoming Indonesia Vs Malaysia clash such a compelling fixture.

Garuda come into the match off the back of a 2-0 win against Singapore, while Malaysia arrive following their 3-0 victory over Bangladesh. Both sides have now had a first look at each other's base strengths, and will now be working to make their own game plans as unpredictable as possible.

For Herdman, the challenge will not end with just selecting his 11 best players.

He will need to find a line-up that can maintain structural balance, sustain attacking intensity, and also neutralise Malaysia's most dangerous players.

At GBK, this Kinship Derby will be the next major test for Indonesia.
