Debutants Pull Off a Surprise, Amri/Nita Advance to the 2026 Asian Games Final

Indonesia has once again opened an opportunity to claim a Gold Medal from the Badminton discipline at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. This time, this hope comes from debut pair Amri Syahnawi / Nita Violina Marwah, who have successfully secured their ticket to the final match.

Amri and Nita's progression to the title decider was confirmed after they delivered a convincing performance in the semifinal round. Facing Chinese opponents Feng Yan Zhe / Huang Dongping, the Indonesian Mixed Doubles pair won in straight games with scores of 21-12, 21-14.

From the very start of the match, Amri and Nita maintained full control of the game. They played aggressively and applied constant pressure, leaving their opponents unable to establish any attacking rhythm.

"There was really heavy pressure on me right from the first point. Early on, they looked far shakier than us, they weren't properly settled. I can't say what they were feeling, but both of us knew we had the edge in fighting spirit. We just committed harder out there," Amri stated after the match in Ichinomiya, Japan on Monday.

For both athletes, reaching this final is an exceptionally meaningful achievement. One day prior, after already locking in their semifinal spot, the pair had agreed to compete without placing unnecessary extra pressure on themselves.

Yet their performance carried them far beyond their original target. They successfully navigated the semifinal round, and now stand just one match away from contesting for the gold medal.

Nita was overcome with raw emotion after the winning point. She could not hold back tears, having never expected to reach the final on their first ever Asian Games appearance.

"It has been such a long time since we qualified for any final. Getting to this stage was never easy for us. We went through so many ups and downs, and earlier this year our results were nowhere near what we hoped for. But now, at this four-yearly Asian Games event, we are going to play in the final. That is why I feel so relieved, so moved, and unbelievably grateful," Nita explained.

Nita emphasised that this achievement did not come by chance. The entire journey alongside Amri, including every disappointing and positive result they earned previously, formed the critical foundation that brought them to the 2026 Asian Games final.

Amri and Nita's run also keeps Indonesia's hopes for badminton gold alive. They will now prepare for one final decisive match to wrap up their debut Asian Games campaign.

Indonesia's badminton medal prospects are not limited to mixed doubles. Three other national representatives will also compete in their respective semifinal rounds.

These remaining athletes are men's singles player Alwi Farhan, alongside two Men's Doubles pairs: Fajar Alfian / Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Leo Rolly Carnando / Daniel Marthin.

As things stand, badminton remains one of the highest potential sports to add to Indonesia's medal tally at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
