South Korean golfer Tom Kim has successfully claimed the Gold Medal for the men's individual category at 2026 Asian Games Golf held in Nagoya, Japan. This victory is not only a major career milestone, but also officially secured him exemption from compulsory Military Service in South Korea.

Tom Kim delivered an impressive performance during the final round at Kasugai Country Club on Saturday, 3 October 2026. The 24-year-old golfer carded a six-under-par score of 64 on the final round of the tournament.

This result brought Tom Kim's total tournament score to 262 strokes, equal to 18 under par. He finished three strokes ahead of three tied competitors: Kazuki Higa from Japan, Ding Wenyi from China, and Sadom Kaewkanjana from Thailand.

Tom Kim had already held the leading position going into the final round. This placement only increased the pressure on him, as an Asian Games gold medal carries unique and high stakes for male South Korean athletes.

In South Korea, male athletes who win an Asian Games gold medal are granted full exemption from mandatory military service. This same privilege also applies to Olympic medallists competing in eligible sport categories.

Mandatory military service for South Korean men generally runs between 18 to 21 months. For professional athletes like Tom Kim, an almost two-year absence from top-level competition carries severe risks to career progression and earning potential.

The pressure was further heightened as Tom Kim travelled to Japan immediately after competing at the Presidents Cup in the United States. He had to complete the intercontinental journey and go directly into Asian Games preparations with almost no recovery period.

Despite the enormous personal stakes riding on this tournament, Tom Kim stated that his greatest pride came from winning the medal on behalf of his home country.

"Even with everything else at stake, what makes me most proud is bringing this medal home for my country," stated Tom Kim.

Tom Kim's final standing was decided across the last 18 holes. He recorded five birdies and one eagle, before dropping a single shot with a bogey on the 17th hole. The lead he had built was sufficient to secure first place right through the final hole.

After sinking his tap-in par on the 18th hole, Tom Kim visibly showed immense relief. This victory also lifted one of the largest lingering pressures that had shadowed his career over recent years.

"I'm just so glad all of this is over," Tom Kim remarked shortly after completing the round.

Tom Kim had previously received an opportunity to secure military exemption at the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, he only finished in 8th position, forcing him to wait for another chance.

That chance finally arrived at the 2026 Asian Games. After the long transcontinental journey from the United States to Japan, and enduring enormous pressure throughout the final round, Tom Kim successfully completed his mission perfectly.

Notably, South Korea failed to secure gold in the men's team category. China claimed the team title, while South Korea only received the silver medal. This outcome meant Tom Kim's teammate S.H. Kim did not qualify for military exemption via the team event.

For Tom Kim, one individual gold medal was enough to clear a new path for his professional career. He can now continue competing full time on the PGA Tour, without having to step away from competition for almost two years to fulfil military service.

This 2026 Asian Games victory means far more than just an additional title for Tom Kim. The Nagoya gold medal is the critical lifeline that will allow this young South Korean golf talent to preserve his career momentum on the world stage.
