Portugal National Team head coach Jorge Jesus has left the door open for Cristiano Ronaldo to return to the Selecao das Quinas squad. This statement from Jesus signals that Ronaldo's future with the Portugal national team is not yet permanently closed.

Portugal defeated Norway 2-1 during the fourth matchday of the ongoing 2026/27 UEFA Nations League. This victory has further drawn public attention to Ronaldo's standing with the national side, after the long-time captain elected to exit the squad during the previous international break.

Jesus confirmed that the final call remains entirely in Ronaldo's hands. According to the coach, as long as the 41-year-old global star remains actively playing and holds the will to represent his nation, Portugal's door will stay open for him.

“I do not know what will happen. For me, everything remains open. Cris must decide what he wants to do with his own life,” stated Jorge Jesus, in remarks reported by Fabrizio Romano.

He emphasized there is no justification to close off opportunity for Ronaldo, as long as the forward still possesses the ability to compete at the highest level and maintains the desire to continue his international career.

“If Cris is still playing and wants to be part of the national team, why would we not have him?” Jesus added.

Ronaldo chose to leave the squad following prior discussions with Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) President Pedro Proenca. He has stated he will explain the full reasoning behind his decision on a later occasion.

This situation emerged after Ronaldo was benched and received no playing time during Portugal's earlier 2-1 win against Norway on 28 September, for the second matchday of the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League.

Jesus has since moved to calm tensions, confirming there is no serious ongoing conflict between himself and Ronaldo, only a misunderstanding which he believes can be resolved.

“There is nothing of that nature. This is all just a misunderstanding. In my opinion, this is an easy issue to sort out,” said Jesus.

This approach from Jesus preserves the possibility of Ronaldo once again wearing the Portugal national jersey. He has avoided making any rushed decisions regarding the player and captain who holds a historic legacy with the Selecao das Quinas.

Ronaldo still maintains major career ambitions. Alongside continuing his club career, he has previously publicly stated his intent to keep representing Portugal, and to hit the milestone of 1000 professional career goals before ending his playing career.
