Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has finally revealed the reasoning behind his decision to walk out of the Portugal national team training camp. He stated that head coach Jorge Jesus broke two promises made to him, a situation that left him with the clear impression he was no longer wanted within the squad.

This statement was published by Ronaldo via a post on his official Instagram account on Wednesday. The 41-year-old national team captain detailed the events that unfolded following Portugal's fixture against Norway in the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League.

Ronaldo confirmed Jesus failed to honour at least two separate commitments previously agreed directly with him, which he cited as the core deciding factor to leave the national team setup.

"This was the second time he went back on his own word," Cristiano wrote in the post.

Prior to this update, Ronaldo had not named Jorge Jesus directly in his initial departure announcement, only referring to the figure as "the Head Coach" when outlining the circumstances of his decision.

In this clarified statement, Ronaldo specified the two broken agreements. The first related to guaranteed playing time during the Norway match, while the second was a promise to provide Ronaldo with formal clarification immediately after the fixture concluded.

Ronaldo stated he had been assured 30 minutes of game time against Norway. Instead, he remained entirely unused on the bench throughout Portugal's 2-1 victory.

The situation continued after full time. Ronaldo confirmed Jesus had also promised to meet with him for clarification following the match, however this commitment was also never fulfilled.

For Ronaldo, this dispute was never purely about playing minutes. He emphasised that the interests of the Portugal national team always take priority over his personal interests, but the treatment he received left him with no doubt he was no longer wanted in the group.

Despite his frustration, Ronaldo issued a public apology to his teammates. He also stated he will accept any disciplinary sanctions handed down by the national Football federation for his decision to leave the training camp.

This position also confirms Ronaldo has not permanently closed the door on representing Portugal. He stated he remains ready to return to the national side once he is fully physically fit, and should any suspension imposed by the federation be completed.

"So as long as I am physically fit, able to perform for the team, and still capable of scoring goals, once any suspension period ends I will be ready — just as I always have been — to compete and fight for victories with our national team," Ronaldo wrote.

Ronaldo's sudden exit from the Portugal camp had previously sparked widespread public speculation. He departed the setup after missing three consecutive training sessions ahead of Portugal's upcoming Nations League fixture against Denmark.

Jorge Jesus has since issued an official response to the situation. The Portugal head coach confirmed the door remains open for Ronaldo to rejoin the squad, on the condition that the striker remains active at competitive club level and maintains the desire to represent his country.

All attention now turns to the next actions from both the national federation and Ronaldo himself. While the superstar's statement has now fully clarified the reasons for his departure, it remains an open question whether the working relationship between all parties can be repaired.
