Portugal megastar Cristiano Ronaldo faces the threat of serious disciplinary action, after the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) imposed an interim suspension following his unauthorised departure from the national team training camp. Ronaldo could be banned from representing Portugal for between one and six months, pending the final ruling from the federation's disciplinary committee.

This case marks a new chapter in the ongoing rift between Ronaldo and Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus. The incident began after the team captain was left unused on the bench for Portugal's 2-1 win over Norway in a UEFA Nations League fixture on 27 September 2026.

According to a 9 October report from The Sun, the interim suspension for the 41-year-old forward was enacted under FPF internal regulations governing players who leave official national team camps without prior approval. The disciplinary committee will now conduct a full review of the case to determine the final length of any formal ban.

Breakdown With Jorge Jesus Triggered The Departure

Tensions between Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus boiled over immediately after the Norway match. Named as a substitute, Ronaldo had completed warm up routines during the second half, but was never brought onto the pitch before the final whistle.

Ronaldo stated he had been explicitly assured prior to kickoff that he would be fielded for approximately 30 minutes, and claimed this agreement was not honoured by the coaching staff.

He also confirmed he held a private post-match discussion with Jesus.

During this meeting, both men had reportedly agreed upon a unified public explanation to be released to the media regarding the situation.

However, Ronaldo later asserted that Jesus' public press comments did not align with what had been agreed privately.

This breakdown ultimately led Ronaldo to walk out of Portugal's training camp in Copenhagen, Denmark, ahead of their upcoming fixture against the host nation.

FPF President Pedro Proença and head coach Jesus both made attempts to persuade Ronaldo to remain with the squad, but were unsuccessful.

Potential Suspension Of Up To Six Months

Under official FPF disciplinary rules, any player who abandons an official national team camp without authorisation is liable to an international call-up ban lasting between one and six months.

Should the disciplinary committee hand down a full length ban, Ronaldo will be ruled ineligible for multiple upcoming Portugal international fixtures.

Ronaldo's status as National Team Captain is also a core factor in the case review, with officials noting the additional leadership responsibilities of this role mean his actions will be held to a higher standard of scrutiny.

No final decision on suspension length has been reached at this time. The disciplinary panel will evaluate the full circumstances leading to Ronaldo's departure, as well as the public apology he issued to supporters and his national team teammates.

Ronaldo has publicly confirmed he will accept whatever ruling the federation reaches, regardless of the consequences. This stance confirms he does not intend to contest or avoid the formal disciplinary process.

Ronaldo Has Not Ended His Portugal International Career

Amid the ongoing controversy, Ronaldo has stated he has no plans to retire from international Football at this time. He intends to continue representing Portugal for as long as he maintains his physical condition and his club performance meets required standards.

This statement confirms that his conflict with Jesus does not mark an immediate end to his international career. The Al Nassr forward remains eligible to return to the Portugal squad once the disciplinary matter is resolved.

For his part, Jesus has also publicly stated that the national team door remains open to Ronaldo. The outcome of the disciplinary hearing and the future working dynamic between the two men will be closely monitored ahead of Portugal's next scheduled fixtures.

This situation presents a difficult dilemma for the Portuguese federation. Ronaldo is the most iconic figure in the history of the national team, however officials are also required to enforce squad rules equally for all players, with additional accountability expected for the team captain.
