Ducati Lenovo Team rider Marc Marquez has claimed the top position in the provisional 2026 MotoGP Standings following victory at the Australian Sprint Race, held at the Phillip Island Circuit on Saturday 24 October 2026. By contrast, Aprilia rider Jorge Martin was forced to retire early from the race after suffering a crash.
The Ducati rider secured an additional 12 points for winning the Sprint Race. Marquez now holds 365 championship points, holding a 10 point lead over Martin, who had topped the standings with 355 points prior to this round.
This standings shift has tightened the battle for the world championship title significantly. For Martin however, the situation is far more difficult, as he will be unable to continue competing in the 2026 Australian MotoGP event due to injury.

Duel Between Marc Marquez and Jorge Martin Ends In Crash
Marc Marquez started the Sprint Race from pole position and immediately moved to defend his lead. The Ducati rider came under intense pressure from Martin, who tracked him closely from the very start of the race.
The rivalry heated up on lap three. Marquez and Martin traded manoeuvres through multiple corners, with both riders pulling a substantial gap over the rest of the chasing field behind them.
Their battle came to an abrupt end on lap eight. While attempting to close in on Marquez, Martin lost control of his machine and slid off the race track.
Track medical teams immediately evacuated Martin to receive emergency treatment.
After Martin was eliminated from the race, Marquez held his lead unchallenged all the way to the chequered flag. His younger brother Alex Marquez finished the race in second place, while Fabio Di Giannantonio secured third position.
This result marked a Marquez family one-two finish on the Australian Sprint Race podium, while also delivering a major championship advantage for Marc Marquez this season.
Jorge Martin Sustains Fractured Right Wrist
Bad news was confirmed for Martin following his medical examination. The Aprilia rider has been declared unfit to continue the 2026 Australian MotoGP round after suffering a bone fracture in his right wrist.
This update was announced via the official MotoGP Instagram account.
"Latest update: @89jorgemartin has been ruled out of the remainder of this race meeting after sustaining a fracture to his right wrist. We wish Jorge a speedy recovery," stated MotoGP via the official post.
This injury is a devastating blow for Martin, who had held the championship lead coming into this round.
With his withdrawal from the Australian round, Martin loses the opportunity to score points in the main Grand Prix race. This development has also raised uncertainty over his physical readiness for the upcoming remaining championship rounds.
Martin's immediate priority is to undergo proper medical recovery. He will require full physical fitness to return to top level competition, especially as the world championship fight enters its critical closing phase.
This Sprint Race victory has given Marc Marquez powerful momentum. Sitting on 365 points with a 10 point buffer over Martin, he now has the opportunity to extend his championship lead further during the main Australian MotoGP Grand Prix race.
There are still five full rounds remaining in the 2026 MotoGP season, including this Australian Grand Prix. For this reason, the title race remains far from decided, even with Marquez now holding control of the standings.
