The 2026 Mandalika MotoGP does not only deliver fierce on-track competition, but also strengthens the standing of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), as an increasingly prominent sports tourism destination. Attendance of over 150,000 visitors during this year's event demonstrates the massive potential of international racing competitions to draw tourists while driving local economic activity.

For travellers, hosting MotoGP at the Mandalika Circuit also creates the opportunity to combine a world-class racing experience with exploration trips across Lombok. This island boasts exceptional beaches, coastal zones, and natural landscapes that can be added to holiday itineraries both before and after the race weekend.

Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri Wardhana stated that the 2026 Mandalika MotoGP marks positive progress for Indonesia's Sport Tourism Indonesia industry.

"Sport is one of the highest potential tourism themes for continued development. Globally, sporting events have been proven to act as extremely effective tourism magnets. For this reason, we must maintain collaborative synergy to enable sustainable, growing sports tourism across Indonesia," Widiyanti stated in an official announcement confirmed in Jakarta on Monday.

During her working visit to Lombok on Sunday 11 October 2026, Widiyanti noted that international-scale sporting competitions are able to attract visitors while generating widespread economic benefits for surrounding communities. The government has also designated the Mandalika MotoGP as a national strategic agenda to advance national sports tourism development.

2026 Mandalika MotoGP Records Over 150,000 Visitors

After four consecutive years of hosting, the Mandalika MotoGP has shown consistent positive development. This progress is reflected in rising spectator numbers alongside growing global attention for this Indonesian motorcycle racing event.

The 2026 Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia, also referred to as 2026 Indonesia MotoGP, recorded its all-time highest attendance at over 150,000 people. This year's event is also projected to generate an economic multiplier effect of up to IDR 5 trillion.

This figure cements the Mandalika MotoGP's role as a key driver for regional tourism activity and economic growth. The large influx of visitors creates opportunities across all business sectors, including accommodation, transport, food and beverage, and local product vendors.

The economic impact of the MotoGP has also been documented in prior event analysis conducted by the Ministry of National Development Planning / National Development Planning Agency (PPN/Bappenas). These studies estimated national economic contributions from previous event editions ranging between IDR 2.7 trillion to IDR 4.7 trillion.

This scale of economic activity demonstrates that benefits from an international sporting event do not end at the circuit boundaries. Visitor spending on accommodation, meals, transport, and travel requirements creates additional income opportunities for business operators across the entire host region.

"The multiplier effect reaches every sector: we recorded 100% hotel occupancy across the Mandalika precinct, 90% occupancy in Central Lombok and Mataram City, increased air passenger volumes, right through to rising turnover for local micro, small and medium enterprises," Widiyanti explained.

Impact Reaches Hotels, Local Food Vendors And All Supporting Sectors

The high visitor volumes during the MotoGP illustrate the direct link between international event hosting and tourism activity. Hotels, transport providers, restaurants, street food vendors, and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) all gain significant additional customer traffic during this tourist surge period.

For local communities, this event window creates an opportunity to showcase their products and services to visitors from across Indonesia and overseas. For the wider tourism industry meanwhile, global sporting events enable the development of bundled travel packages combining race tickets, accommodation, transport, and side trips to surrounding attractions.

That said, the high visitor numbers and economic activity generated during the event must be paired with efforts to sustain tourist arrivals long term. The core challenge is not only drawing crowds during the MotoGP weekend, but encouraging these visitors to return to Lombok outside of the racing calendar.

Lombok Has Major Potential To Grow Tourism Beyond MotoGP

MotoGP acts as an entry point for tourists who have never previously visited Lombok. After experiencing the race atmosphere in Mandalika, visitors are able to extend their trip to discover the island's other attractions.

Beach and coastal zones, nature tourism, cultural experiences, and local cuisine can all form part of an extended travel itinerary. This strategy is critical to ensure tourist arrivals are not concentrated only on race days, and that benefits are distributed to destinations and business operators across all parts of the island.

For travellers planning to attend the MotoGP, it is strongly recommended to book accommodation and transport well in advance. Extremely high demand during the event period will cause very limited lodging availability, especially in areas close to the circuit.

Visitors are also advised to structure their itinerary to split time between attending the races and exploring surrounding destinations. With proper planning, a trip to Mandalika does not need to end once the racing concludes.

Widiyanti noted that Indonesia's success hosting international sporting events demonstrates the country's capacity to leverage sports tourism to boost destination appeal, expand business opportunities, and drive community economic development.

According to her, the long term benefits of hosting MotoGP must be continuously strengthened, rather than only being felt during the race event itself. Sustained growth in tourist arrivals and economic activity is a core component of using international sporting events as a driver for Sustainable Tourism.

Sports Tourism Represents Major Opportunity For Indonesian Tourism

Sports tourism has evolved into a global industry that intersects sport, travel, media, and the creative economy. In modern practice, an international competition does not function only as spectator entertainment: it also builds destination reputation and showcases regional potential to a global audience.

To strengthen this sector, the Ministry of Tourism has committed to formal cooperation with the Ministry of Youth and Sports. This collaboration is focused on optimising sports Tourism Potential, improving international event hosting standards, and expanding the economic benefits received by the tourism industry and local communities.

The 2026 Mandalika MotoGP is a clear example of how sporting agendas can be utilised to introduce Indonesian destinations to international visitors. Going forward, its success will be measured most meaningfully by its ability to drive repeat visitation, strengthen local enterprises, and establish Lombok as an attractive year-round travel destination.
