Rory McIlroy has opened the door for golfers who departed the PGA Tour to join LIV Golf to return. The Northern Irish star believes the homecoming of multiple top-tier players would bring benefits for the development of global professional golf.

McIlroy's position has drawn widespread attention, given he has long been one of the most outspoken critics of LIV Golf ever since the series launched in 2022 and fractured the landscape of men's professional golf competition.

Speaking in an interview with Bloomberg in New Delhi ahead of competing at the DP World India Championship, McIlroy stated that LIV no longer poses as significant a threat to the traditional structure of golf as it once did.

Uncertainty over LIV's future has grown increasingly apparent after multiple players began publicly considering ending their association with the tour.

McIlroy Backs LIV Players Returning To The PGA Tour

When asked whether he would vote to readmit LIV players to the PGA Tour, the six-time major champion gave an unwavering response.

"Yes. I would vote for that.

"The way I see it, a rising tide lifts all boats. And I truly believe bringing some of these players back would be an unqualified positive for the operation of the tour."

This comment confirms McIlroy has now adopted a far more open stance towards potential reconciliation. In his assessment, the return of high-profile golfers would deliver tangible benefits for tour organisers.

Stronger on-course competition paired with the presence of star names would likely boost tournament appeal and expand the commercial ecosystem of professional golf.

That noted, any formal return process for players will remain subject to the official policies of each respective tour.

McIlroy Criticises LIV's Financial Management

LIV Golf is currently in line to receive USD 300 million, approximately £226 million, in funding from BC Partners Credit.

However this injection of capital has still not resolved the persistent uncertainty hanging over the tour's long term viability.

Prior to this, LIV was funded by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), before the sovereign wealth fund withdrew its backing earlier this year.

McIlroy argued that this large pool of capital should have been deployed to grow the sport on a far broader scale.

"LIV probably had half a good idea, but the execution was absolutely terrible," McIlroy told Bloomberg.

"They had an enormous amount of money, but so much of it was just wasted in my view. They could have used it with a far better strategy, and built proper working partnerships with the governing bodies of this sport.

"They absolutely could have done far more meaningful things with that money, instead of just making already very wealthy professional golfers even richer."

McIlroy also highlighted the growing number of players that are reportedly declining to re-sign with LIV for the upcoming season, a dynamic that is compounding challenges for the tour's ongoing operations.

"It feels like every single day there is another former LIV player coming forward to say they will not be returning for LIV 2.0.

"So I think it will be extremely difficult for them to exit this Chapter 11 bankruptcy process and continue operating as a going concern.

"Even if they do manage to pull it off, LIV will never again pose the same kind of existential threat to the traditional structure of this sport that it once did."

McIlroy And Tiger Woods Warned Golf Would Be Splintered

When LIV Golf first launched in 2022, McIlroy took a firm opposing stance. He feared the upheaval of the professional golf landscape would destroy the unity of the sport built over decades across tours and major championships.

He confirmed 15-time major champion Tiger Woods shared these exact concerns. Both men understood they had a huge stake if professional golf became permanently split between competing factions.

"We both agreed this was bad for the sport of golf, that it would tear our sport apart," he added.

McIlroy did however acknowledge all parties were acting in their own interests. At the time LIV was expanding, he and other stakeholders were preparing the launch of TGL, the Tomorrow's Golf League - a competition which requires all participants to hold active PGA Tour membership.

"But everyone involved in this sport has their own interests too. We were getting ready to launch TGL, and we knew LIV could poach talent from that project. Which is exactly what happened: multiple players signed with LIV, and you cannot compete in TGL unless you are a PGA Tour member."

The Rift Also Damaged Personal Friendships

The division in professional golf also impacted McIlroy's life outside competition. He has admitted he is no longer as close as he once was with a number of golfers he previously competed alongside for Europe at the Ryder Cup.

"Yes, of course there are guys I played with on the European Ryder Cup team that I just do not have the same relationship with anymore.

"We hold fundamentally different views on the future of golf, and I don't believe that should ever be reason to lose a friendship. But the reality is we simply do not cross paths anymore.

"They don't enter the same tournaments, they are no longer eligible for Ryder Cup selection, they do not qualify for the major championships.

"When you stop regularly spending time around people, those connections naturally fade over time."

Conflicting tournament schedules and eligibility rules have reshaped personal relationships between players amid the split between the two tours.

McIlroy's willingness to support LIV players returning has now opened a path for these rifts to begin healing.

That said, any full reconciliation will still ultimately depend on individual player decisions, tour membership regulations, and the ongoing Business outlook for LIV Golf.
