Ducati Lenovo rider Marc Marquez has chosen not to set any specific targets for the 2026 Australian MotoGP at the Phillip Island Circuit this Sunday. Despite arriving off the back of strong competitive results from the Indonesian MotoGP, Marc Marquez is aware that weather conditions may become the deciding factor over this race weekend.

Marquez concluded the race round at Mandalika Circuit, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara with positive outcomes. He won the Saturday sprint race, before finishing sixth in the main Grand Prix on Sunday 11 October.

This result provides valuable momentum for the seven-time MotoGP world champion as he pursues the 2026 season title. Marquez currently sits second in the provisional standings with 353 points, only 2 points behind championship leader Jorge Martin.

Even so, Marquez is not rushing to set fixed targets for the Phillip Island round. While this high-speed circuit is counted among his favourite tracks, the threat of incoming rain presents a unique challenge.

"We will just see what I can deliver. We have completed evaluations this week, especially since the weather does not look favourable... but this is a circuit I love very much, it has so many left-hand corners, and I have always put in good performances here," Marc Marquez stated, as quoted from the official MotoGP website on Thursday.

Phillip Island's layout gives Marquez good reason to remain confident. Its high number of left turns and full-throttle sectors are considered well suited to both his riding style and the characteristics of the Ducati Desmosedici GP-26.

However, weather conditions can completely shift the competitive landscape. Heavy rain risks impacting tyre selection, track grip levels, and race strategy for all riders across the entire weekend.

Marquez holds an impressive track record at Phillip Island. The Spanish rider has claimed four victories at this Australian circuit, making him the currently active rider with the most wins at the venue.

This total still falls short of the records set by Casey Stoner and Valentino Rossi, who each secured six wins at Phillip Island. This prior experience will serve as an asset for Marquez as he takes on one of the most beloved rounds on the MotoGP calendar.

Despite his strong history at the track, Marquez cannot overlook the threat of his rivals. Both Aprilia Racing riders Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi have shown promising form and represent serious title contenders.

The battle between these three riders will have direct consequences for the world championship standings. Marquez only trails Martin by two points, but lost ground to Bezzecchi during the Mandalika round.

In Indonesia, Marquez claimed sprint race victory. However he could not match the pace of the Aprilia riders during the main Grand Prix, eventually settling for sixth place behind Bezzecchi, Raul Fernandez, Martin, Ai Ogura and Pedro Acosta.

Even with this result, Marquez assessed the Mandalika weekend as positive progress, particularly given the circuit has historically been difficult for him. He went as far as describing the Lombok round as a perfect weekend.

"I scored the same number of points as [Jorge] Martin, and we only lost a small amount of ground to [Marco] Bezzecchi at a circuit that has always given me major issues before. All things considered, we worked very well here," he explained.

Now the challenge awaits at Phillip Island. Marquez will need a maximum points haul to close in on Martin at the top of the standings, but first he must confirm the Ducati can deliver competitive performance across variable track conditions that rain may bring.

With just two points separating the championship leaders, the Australian MotoGP is shaping up to be one of the defining moments of this season's title fight.
