Ducati Lenovo rider Marc Marquez has moved ever closer to the 2026 MotoGP World Championship title. Following his victory at the Malaysian Grand Prix held at Sepang Circuit on Sunday 1 November, Marquez now holds a 44 point advantage over his closest rival Jorge Martin, leaving his title chances wide open.

The Sepang result gives Marquez the platform to seal his eighth premier class world title at the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix. However, the Spanish rider is refusing to celebrate prematurely, acknowledging there is still work to be done before the championship can be confirmed.

"Right now we are leading the Standings and there are very few rounds remaining, but our job is not done yet and there is still a lot that can happen," stated Marc Marquez, quoted via the official Ducati Lenovo website.

This statement reflects Marquez's approach heading into the final three rounds of the season. It will not only be necessary for him to defend his points lead, he must also avoid costly errors that would allow his rivals to close the gap.

Marquez controlled the entire Sepang race, crossing the finish line 4.172 seconds clear of second placed Pedro Acosta. Alex Marquez completed the podium in third position.

This result marks Marquez's seventh victory of the 2026 MotoGP season, and his 80th premier class Grand Prix win across his entire career. He now sits on 399 championship points, 44 clear of Jorge Martin who has 355 points.

Meanwhile Marco Bezzecchi occupies third place in the standings with 332 points. Pedro Acosta sits fourth on 295 points, followed by Ai Ogura on 278 points.

The title battle swung firmly in Marquez's favour after Martin was unable to compete in the main Sepang Grand Prix. The Aprilia Racing rider is still recovering from a wrist injury sustained in a crash at the Australian MotoGP round.

Martin had attempted to take part in practice sessions in Malaysia, but was not fit enough to continue through the race weekend, opting to withdraw before qualifying got underway.

Qatar Grand Prix Presents First Opportunity To Seal Title

The 2026 Qatar MotoGP round will be held at the Lusail International Circuit across 6-8 November. This is the 20th round out of the 22 total races scheduled for this season.

Marquez holds a mathematical possibility of wrapping up the world title in Qatar. However, winning the main Grand Prix alone will not be enough to secure the championship, with points still available from the Sprint Race as well as the two remaining rounds after Qatar.

Based on standings calculations following the Malaysian Grand Prix, Marquez will need to extend his advantage over Jorge Martin to a minimum of 74 points. Should he reach this margin, Martin will be mathematically eliminated from title contention even with the maximum 74 points still on offer across the final two rounds.

Marquez must also account for Bezzecchi's position. The Aprilia rider is 67 points adrift, and has claimed five Grand Prix victories so far this season.

As such, both the Saturday Sprint Race and Sunday main Grand Prix will carry equal importance. Marquez will need to score as many points as possible, while hoping his rivals drop points.

Following the Qatar round, the MotoGP calendar will conclude with the Portuguese Grand Prix on 20-22 November and the Valencia Grand Prix on 27-29 November. This means securing the title at Lusail is Marquez's first opportunity, not his only one.

Marquez Chases Historic Eighth Premier Class Title

Should he claim the 2026 world championship, Marquez will have won eight MotoGP premier class titles. He already holds seven previous crowns, won in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2025.

An eighth title will move him past Valentino Rossi, who also won seven premier class world championships. This would leave only Giacomo Agostini above Marquez in the all-time premier class title records.

Marquez's form this season has demonstrated consistent performance after he regained the world championship in 2025. Last year he ended a six year title drought to claim his seventh crown with Ducati Lenovo.

Now, the number 93 rider has the chance to extend his dominance at the top of the sport. His seven wins so far in 2026 have proven he remains capable of competing at the very highest level.

Even so, Marquez is maintaining full focus on every session. The Qatar Grand Prix will be the first test of turning his standings lead into that historic eighth world championship title.
