The race for the Group H title at the 2027 AFC U-20 Asian Cup Qualifiers has narrowed down to two teams. Both Indonesia U-20 and Australia sit on four points, meaning their final group fixture will be the deciding match to determine which side finishes at the top of the standings.

Indonesia claimed the top of the table following a convincing performance against host nation Laos at the New Laos National Stadium on Thursday. The Young Garuda squad sealed a 3-0 victory, improving their position after their previous drawn match.

Fabio Azkairawan opened Indonesia's lead just four minutes into the fixture. Laos attempted to keep their chances alive, but Indonesia extended their advantage shortly before the end of the first half.

In the 38th minute, Zahaby Gholy converted a loose rebound inside the penalty area after Aleandro Maulana's strike was parried by the Laos goalkeeper. Gholy finished the chance cleanly to put Indonesia 2-0 ahead.

Indonesia did not ease off their pressure after the half-time break. Gholy found the net once again in the 63rd minute to wrap up the 3-0 victory.

With the three points collected from this match, Indonesia now hold 4 points from two games. They sit in first place as they hold a superior goal difference over Australia, despite both teams having an equal points total.

Australia Fail To Defeat Malaysia

Australia had held the opportunity to take sole leadership of the group standings. Instead, they were only able to secure a 2-2 draw against Malaysia.

This result leaves Australia also on 4 points, level with Indonesia. Meanwhile Malaysia occupy third place with two points, having recorded two consecutive drawn matches.

Laos have been eliminated from qualification contention after suffering defeats in both of their opening two fixtures.

On the final matchday for Group H, Indonesia will face Australia on Sunday 6 September, while Malaysia will play against Laos.

The upcoming clash between Indonesia U-20 and Australia will be a direct head-to-head decider for the group top spot. Both teams hold identical records: four points, one win and one draw.

The scenario is simple: whichever team can secure victory will guarantee themselves first place in Group H.

For Indonesia, beating Australia is not just about retaining their current first position. Winning the group carries critical importance, as only group winners earn an automatic direct ticket to the 2027 AFC U-20 Asian Cup finals tournament.

Meanwhile, teams that finish as group runners-up will be forced to wait and rely on results from the other qualification groups.

With one match remaining for both sides, Indonesia and Australia stand completely level. Their upcoming meeting will decide who will be crowned Group H winners.
