Kimi Antonelli's Spectacular Comeback at the Italian Grand Prix: Started from 19th position, ended as the race winner.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli delivered one of the most remarkable comeback stories in the 2026 Formula 1 season. Starting the Italian Grand Prix from 19th position at Monza Circuit, the Mercedes driver emerged as the race winner, claiming his seventh victory of the campaign.

Held on Sunday 6 September, this race became the stage for the 20-year-old Italian driver to demonstrate his composure and sharp strategic instinct. An engine change penalty that forced him to start from the back of the grid did not halt Antonelli's charge to the top step of the podium.

"This is unbelievable, I am so happy. I never imagined I could win this race, but we put in the hard work to pull this off and I am absolutely overjoyed," Kimi stated, as quoted by official Formula 1 media.

This victory at Monza carries extra significance: Antonelli is now the first Italian driver to win the Italian Grand Prix since Ludovico Scarfiotti achieved the feat in 1966.

Tyre Strategy Proved Decisive

Antonelli did not rely solely on raw speed to climb up from 19th position. The critical turning point came after a red flag was deployed when Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc crashed into the circuit barriers.

This disruption allowed Mercedes to completely revise their race approach. Antonelli capitalised on the opportunity presented by a Virtual Safety Car period mid-way through the 53-lap race.

The Mercedes driver entered the pits to switch to Medium compound tyres. This decision separated him from teammate George Russell, who elected to stay out on track running Hard tyres.

As the race entered its closing stages, Kimi settled into a consistent, comfortable pace. By contrast, Russell began struggling to maintain his speed.

"In the end we took that pit stop, Russell stayed out on the alternate strategy and he fought major tyre degradation right until the chequered flag. With the better tyre package I was able to keep building my pace and push through for this win," Kimi explained.

Antonelli's strategy was fully vindicated. He held the lead all the way to the finish line, beating Russell who settled for second place.

Seven Wins, 267 Championship Points

The Monza result has further solidified Antonelli's dominance in the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship title race. From 13 completed rounds this season, the Italian driver has now secured seven victories.

Boosted by this home win, Kimi sits comfortably at the top of the Drivers' Standings with 267 points. George Russell occupies second position with 201 points.

This 66-point advantage gives Antonelli a strong buffer as the season enters its final phase. However the title battle remains open, with 10 race weekends still remaining on the calendar.

The remaining 10 rounds will take place in Spain, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Singapore, the United States, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

With seven wins from 13 races, Kimi has not only established himself as the most consistent driver of 2026, he has also progressed from strong title contender to clear outright favourite for the World Championship crown.
