Lionel Messi Retires, Atletico Madrid Defender Becomes Argentina's New Captain

Argentina National Team has entered a new era following Lionel Messi's retirement from International Football. The captain's armband of La Albiceleste has now been entrusted to Cristian Romero, the 28-year-old defender who Lionel Scaloni deemed the right figure to take over the role left by the megastar.

This decision was confirmed by Scaloni ahead of Argentina's series of friendly matches against Bolivia, Burkina Faso, and Benin. The La Albiceleste head coach noted that Romero had already been part of the team's leadership line-up behind Messi and Nicolas Otamendi prior to this appointment.

"The captain is Cuti (Cristian Romero). He was already our third captain after Leo and Ota (Nicolas Otamendi)," stated Scaloni, as quoted by Tribuna on Saturday.

Romero is not the only senior player in Argentina's squad. Emiliano Martinez, Rodrigo De Paul, and Lautaro Martinez also have prior experience wearing the captain's armband.

However, Scaloni believes Romero holds the leadership qualities that Argentina requires in this post-Messi era. The Atletico Madrid defender was selected to become the main on-pitch leading figure, while also carrying forward the leadership structure established by the previous generation.

"Emiliano (Martinez) can also wear the armband. Rodrigo (De Paul), who will miss these two matches, is also capable. Lautaro (Martinez) is another option. But Cuti is the right choice," Scaloni added.

This appointment was not a last-minute decision. Romero has already been trusted to lead Argentina on multiple occasions in international matches before.

His first opportunity came when Argentina faced Chile during the World Cup Qualifiers 2025. Romero wore the captain's armband and helped La Albiceleste secure a 1-0 victory.

He was once again named captain for Argentina's international friendly against Venezuela in October 2025.

His leadership experience grew further when he led the side to a 2-1 win over Mauritania in a preparation match ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Now Romero carries a far greater responsibility. With Messi having departed the international stage, Romero will stand as one of Argentina's primary on-pitch figures.

Scaloni's choice also demonstrates the immense faith placed in Romero's ability to lead from the defensive line.

Romero is not only expected to fulfil his defensive duties, but also act as a key liaison between the coaching staff and the rest of the squad.

That said, Romero's status as Argentina captain is not permanently guaranteed. His position within La Albiceleste's leadership structure may change should Scaloni no longer manage the national team come 2027.

For the time being, Romero is the official successor to Messi's captain armband. Argentina's new era thus begins with this 28-year-old defender as one of the central figures within the squad.
