Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have faced almost identical challenges at Manchester United. Both men sparked fresh hope when they first arrived as interim managers at Old Trafford, only for fortunes to shift drastically once they were awarded a permanent managerial contract.

Carrick has come under intense scrutiny following Manchester United's catastrophic start to the 2026/2027 season. A 3-0 home Premier League defeat against Bournemouth at Old Trafford, followed by a 4-1 loss to Como in the Champions League, have ramped up pressure on the coach - who just months prior successfully guided the Red Devils back to Europe's top club competition.

This situation draws striking parallels with the tenure of former Manchester United Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Norwegian boss also enjoyed an extremely promising start after replacing Jose Mourinho in December 2018, before the team's form collapsed immediately after his interim status was upgraded to a permanent role in March 2019.

Blistering Starts That Turned Into Sentimental Traps

When Carrick took over from Ruben Amorim in January 2026, he immediately transformed the mood inside the Manchester United dressing room. A side that had previously struggled for any consistency began stringing together wins, including notable victories over multiple elite Premier League clubs.

Across his interim spell, Carrick recorded 11 wins, 3 draws and 2 defeats from 16 league fixtures. This run secured Manchester United 3rd place and Champions League qualification, while also building overwhelming support for him to be handed the permanent manager position.

The club board ultimately awarded Carrick a two-year contract in May 2026. This decision was based on his on-pitch results, as well as his proven ability to rebuild player confidence and restore a positive culture inside the squad.

Solskjaer followed an almost identical path. After replacing Mourinho he led United on an impressive winning streak, most famously knocking out Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. This form was rewarded with a permanent managerial appointment in March 2019.

That positive momentum did not hold. United ended the 2018/2019 season in 6th place, suffering damaging heavy defeats against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Everton and Manchester City along the way.

These two near-identical trajectories have raised critical questions about the risks of making permanent appointments based purely on short-term interim momentum. Success in a temporary caretaker role does not automatically translate to an ability to sustain performance under the full weight of long-term pressure and fan expectations.

Carrick's Form Collapses After Permanent Appointment

The contrast in Carrick's results is stark when comparing his interim period to the opening of the 2026/2027 season. As interim manager he had United competing at the top end of the table; since being given the permanent job the club has fallen into a full-blown results crisis.

Across all competitions in the 2026/2027 season, Carrick has registered just 2 wins, 4 draws and 6 defeats from 12 matches. This gives him a win rate of only 16.7 percent.

In the Premier League, Manchester United have picked up just one win from eight matches, alongside four draws and three defeats. With only 7 points accumulated, the Red Devils currently sit 16th in the table, just one single point above the relegation zone.

Results in other competitions have provided no relief. United recorded one win and two defeats from their first three Champions League matches, before being knocked out of the EFL Cup at their first fixture in the competition.

This run of poor results has intensified pressure on Carrick. Manchester United are now on an eight match winless streak across all competitions, which includes the heavy lopsided defeats to Como and Bournemouth.

Solskjaer's Tenure Serves As A Clear Warning For United's Board

Solskjaer's experience demonstrates how promotion from interim to permanent manager brings entirely new, heavier pressures. Once appointed permanently, a coach is no longer only expected to turn around an immediate bad situation - they are now required to deliver consistent results and build a squad capable of competing across an entire full season.

Solskjaer did go on to guide United to a 3rd place finish in 2019/2020 and 2nd place in the 2020/2021 season. Even so, he was ultimately dismissed in November 2021 after the team's form once again deteriorated sharply.

Over his permanent tenure at the club, Solskjaer recorded 78 wins, 33 draws and 38 defeats from 149 matches across all competitions.

Carrick now faces a very similar challenge, though the two scenarios are not fully identical. Solskjaer was granted time to rebuild after his early slump, while pressure on Carrick has spiked dramatically with United now hovering dangerously near the relegation places.

Internal club debate over the next course of action is already underway. Names including Julian Nagelsmann, Eddie Howe and Kieran McKenna have been linked with the Manchester United Head Coach position, though reports of potential replacements do not confirm that a decision to sack Carrick has already been finalised.

Following the Bournemouth defeat, pundit Jamie Carragher was among those stating that Carrick's position at Old Trafford is now under serious threat. For now however, Manchester United have retained Carrick to take charge of the team for their upcoming weekend fixture against Chelsea.
