Michael Carrick's position at Manchester United is growing increasingly unstable. The 0-3 home defeat against Bournemouth at Old Trafford has ramped up pressure on the manager. Senior club officials are confirmed to have held discussions regarding his future at the Carrington training complex. No formal ruling has been issued, but speculation over Carrick's potential dismissal continues to gain traction.

Manchester United Chief Executive Omar Berrada and Football Director Jason Wilcox first convened to review Carrick's situation immediately after the Bournemouth loss on Sunday 25 October. The pair returned for a second meeting at Carrington the following day, with the manager's future as the sole agenda focus.

Carrick arrived at the training ground while Manchester United's U21 squad were playing a closed-door friendly against Hull. Wilcox departed the premises shortly before Carrick left the site.

Manchester United has not published any official update. Nevertheless, pressure on Carrick continues to mount amid dismal match results and the side falling further adrift of the league's upper positions.

From Revival Hero To Target Of Criticism

This situation marks a dramatic reversal from the opening months of Carrick's tenure. Appointed in January 2026 following Ruben Amorim's exit, the former Red Devils midfielder successfully turned around squad form and guided Manchester United to a 3rd placed finish in the 2025/2026 Premier League.

The club rewarded Carrick's performance with a two-year contract. That faith is now hanging by a thread after Manchester United's form collapsed at the start of the new campaign.

The Bournemouth loss extends a miserable run for the club, coming just days after a heavy 1-4 defeat to Como in the Champions League. Carrick's side have now gone eight consecutive matches without recording a victory.

The club's season start is equally alarming. Manchester United have won just two of their twelve matches across all competitions. In the Premier League, collecting only seven points from eight fixtures marks the club's worst league season start since 1986.

This run of poor results has left the Red Devils sat 16th in the table, just one point above the relegation zone. This standing is a stark contrast to last season's top three finish and the club's pre-season expectations.

An upcoming away fixture against Chelsea on Saturday 31 October arrives at an extremely critical juncture. Manchester United desperately require a positive result, while Carrick faces one pressing unanswered question: does he still retain the full backing of club management?

Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann Emerge As Potential Replacements

Amid uncertainty over Carrick's future, two names have been linked to the vacant Manchester United manager position. According to ESPN reports, Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann have been shortlisted as leading candidates should Carrick be dismissed.

At this stage both names remain only preliminary options, with no formal dismissal or appointment process yet activated by the club.

Carrick has refused to comment on speculation regarding his future. After the Bournemouth defeat, he left the pitch with a small wave towards pockets of supporters that were chanting his name.

Inside the stadium stands, fan frustration has not been limited exclusively to the playing squad and manager. The Glazer ownership family, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and the INEOS leadership team including Jason Wilcox have also been targeted with anger from supporters.

Bruno Fernandes Dropped As Internal Tensions Boil Over

Carrick's decision to bench club captain Bruno Fernandes has drawn further intense scrutiny. The 32-year-old midfielder has failed to replicate the form that saw him claim both the PFA and FWA Player of the Year awards last season.

Fernandes had publicly questioned Carrick's tactical setup following the 4-1 defeat against Como. Carrick has maintained that dropping the captain was a purely technical decision, not disciplinary punishment. Fernandes did not play a single minute during the Bournemouth match.

Further internal friction emerged after Lisandro Martínez was handed a club fine and summoned for formal disciplinary talks, after the defender publicly criticised club management in an interview following the defeat against Atletico Madrid.

The combination of collapsing on-pitch results and growing internal division has left Carrick in an extremely precarious position. He is now tasked with not only rescuing the club's season form, but also navigating supporter unrest and ongoing uncertainty over management support.

Manchester United will travel to face Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday 31 October. The domestic calendar will then pause for the international break, before the Red Devils return for home fixtures against AS Roma and Aston Villa.

Time is rapidly running out for Carrick to reverse the club's fortunes. Until an official announcement is published however, his future at Old Trafford remains undecided.
