Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi has added another landmark career achievement after receiving the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports in Oviedo, Spain. Even amid this prestigious recognition, Messi continued to demonstrate his full commitment to his club Inter Miami.
Messi became the first individual footballer ever to receive the Princess of Asturias award during the ceremony held Friday 23 October 2026. He was first announced as the award recipient back in June 2026, in recognition of both his historic accomplishments within global Sports and the exemplary values embodied through his public character.
The Princess of Asturias Awards are granted by the Princess of Asturias Foundation to individuals or institutions judged to have delivered exceptional contributions within their field and for wider society. This honour places Messi amongst an elite list of laureates whose influence extends far beyond their professional achievements.

Inter Miami do not want to lose Lionel Messi, and are preparing a contract that runs until 2030.
Lionel Messi is getting ever closer to becoming the all-time greatest free kick king in football history, as he only needs 3 more goals to claim this record.
While attending the award proceedings in Spain, Messi did not set aside his obligations with Inter Miami. The Argentine player arranged an immediate return to the United States to join team preparations for the upcoming Major League Soccer (MLS) fixture against New York Red Bulls.
Messi's conduct received public praise from Inter Miami head coach Cristian "Killy" Gonzalez. He stated that Messi's decision to rejoin the squad immediately after collecting one of the world's most distinguished civilian awards perfectly reflects the player's core character and dedication.
For Gonzalez, Messi's value to the team runs far beyond his on-field ability. The 39-year-old's willingness to cut short his time in Spain to stand alongside his teammates demonstrates the depth of his sense of responsibility to the club.
“Of course we are counting on Leo Messi for tomorrow's match. But what makes me most proud above everything else is his commitment to this club and every single member of this team,” Gonzalez stated, quoted by ESPN.
Gonzalez also highlighted the meaning behind Messi's latest award. He noted that this recognition was awarded not only for Messi's legacy as a footballer, but for the consistent values he demonstrates throughout his professional life.
“After all the emotional moments he experienced this week in Spain, he voluntarily chose to come straight back here to join us and play tomorrow. All of us can be proud of him,” Gonzalez added.
Inter Miami are scheduled to face New York Red Bulls at Sports Illustrated Stadium, Harrison, New Jersey on Sunday 25 October 2026, kickoff 04.30 WIB. This match forms part of the club's efforts to maintain competitive momentum ahead of the MLS playoff rounds.
Inter Miami currently sit second in the Eastern Conference Standings with 55 points collected from 30 matches. The defending MLS Cup champions have already secured playoff qualification, with four regular season fixtures still remaining.
Messi's return for the New York Red Bulls preparations has been welcomed as positive news for Inter Miami. Once again, after collecting a major individual honour, the Argentine has proven that personal achievements will never overshadow his commitment to the club.
