Al Ain Destroy Al Nassr, Cristiano Ronaldo Suffers His Worst Defeat Since 2022

Cristiano Ronaldo began Al Nassr's 2026/2027 AFC Champions League Elite campaign with a painful defeat. Playing away at Al Ain's home ground in the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, Al Nassr suffered a 0-4 loss to the host side.

This heavy defeat is not merely a poor opening match result. This marks the first time since 2022 that Ronaldo has been part of a squad that lost by a four-goal margin.

Al Nassr entered the fixture as the reigning Saudi Pro League champions. However, their standing offered very little advantage when facing Al Ain on their home pitch.

Houssine Rahimi opened the scoring for the home side in the 25th minute. The Moroccan forward piled further pressure on Al Nassr after netting his second goal in the 60th minute.

Al Nassr attempted to find a route back into the game, only to concede once again. Soufiane Rahimi, Houssine's younger brother, extended Al Ain's lead to 3-0 in the 72nd minute.

Al Ain did not ease off. Soufiane turned provider for the home side's fourth goal, laying an assist that was finished cleanly by Georgios Giakoumakis. With the score at 4-0, the deficit had become unassailable for Al Nassr.

Al Nassr's miserable night was compounded when Ronaldo's free kick was parried away by Al Ain goalkeeper Khalid Eisa. Al Nassr slumped to a heavy defeat, with Ronaldo failing to bring his career goal tally to 980.

For Ronaldo, this poor result echoes the record set back in August 2022, when his then club Manchester United was beaten 0-4 by Brentford.

Four years later, Ronaldo has once again experienced defeat by the exact same margin. The key difference this time is that this loss comes while Ronaldo is central to Al Nassr's project chasing top continental honours in Asian football.

Al Nassr head coach Ange Postecoglou took full responsibility for his team's poor performance. He refused to shift blame onto any of his players after the final whistle.

"The players gave everything they had, I do not blame them. This responsibility falls on me. As a unit, Al Nassr performed poorly tonight," Postecoglou stated, as quoted by ESPN.

Returning from Al Ain with zero points extends Al Nassr's current run of poor form. The defending Saudi Pro League champions have only recorded one win from their last four matches across all competitions.

In the provisional standings for the AFC Champions League Elite West Region league phase, Al Ain sits top of the table with three points. Al Nassr meanwhile sits rock bottom of the group with zero points and a goal difference of minus four.

Al Nassr's disastrous start stands in stark contrast to results from other Saudi Arabian representatives in the competition. Al Hilal opened their Asian campaign with a 2-1 victory over Qatari club Al Gharafa.

Two other Saudi sides, Al Ahli and Al Ittihad, each collected one point. Al Ahli played out a 1-1 draw against Uzbekistan's Pakhtakor, while Al Ittihad was held to a draw by Qatar's Al Shamal.

Al Qadsiah was the other Saudi representative to secure a win, beating United Arab Emirates side Al Wasl 2-1.

Nevertheless, all public and media attention remains firmly fixed on Al Nassr. Ronaldo and his teammates must produce an immediate response following this nightmare night at Al Ain, especially as the AFC Champions League Elite campaign has only just begun.
