Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have faced near-identical challenges at Manchester United. Both initially brought fresh hope when appointed as interim managers at Old Trafford, only for fortunes to shift drastically once they were awarded permanent managerial contracts.

Carrick has come under heavy scrutiny following Manchester United's disastrous start to the 2026/2027 season. A 0-3 home defeat against Bournemouth in the Premier League and a 1-4 loss to Como in the Champions League have ramped up pressure on the coach, who just months prior successfully guided the Red Devils back to Europe's top club competition.

This situation draws striking parallels with the tenure of former Manchester United Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Norwegian boss also enjoyed a promising opening run after replacing Jose Mourinho in December 2018, before team performance collapsed once his interim role was converted to a permanent position in March 2019.

Bright Starts That Became Sentimental Traps

After taking over from Ruben Amorim in January 2026, Carrick successfully turned around the atmosphere inside the Manchester United dressing room. A side that had previously struggled for consistency began stringing together wins, including notable results against leading Premier League clubs.

During his interim spell, Carrick recorded 11 wins, 3 draws and just 2 defeats from 16 league matches. This run secured Manchester United 3rd place and Champions League qualification, while also building widespread support for him to be appointed permanent head coach.

The club board eventually handed Carrick a two-year contract in May 2026. This decision was based on his positive on-pitch results, as well as his proven ability to rebuild player confidence and restore a healthy dressing room culture.

Solskjaer followed an almost identical path. He led Manchester United on an extended winning run after replacing Mourinho, including the famous Champions League comeback victory over Paris Saint-Germain. This form earned him a permanent managerial appointment in March 2019.

That positive momentum did not last long. Manchester United ended the 2018/2019 season in 6th place after suffering critical defeats against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Everton and Manchester City.

These two parallel tenures have raised serious questions over the risks of making permanent appointments based solely on short-term interim form. Success during a temporary caretaker spell is no guarantee that a manager can sustain results under the long-term pressure and heightened expectations that come with a permanent role.

Carrick's Statistics Collapse After Permanent Appointment

The contrast in Carrick's performance is stark when comparing his interim period against the opening of the 2026/2027 season. While operating as caretaker manager he had United competing at the top end of the table. Since being handed the permanent job, the club has fallen into a full results crisis.

Across all competitions so far in 2026/2027, Carrick has registered just 2 wins, 4 draws and 6 defeats from 12 matches. This gives him a win rate of only 16.7%.

In the Premier League specifically, Manchester United have picked up just 1 win from 8 matches, alongside 4 draws and 3 defeats. With only 7 points collected, the Red Devils currently sit 16th in the table, just one single point above the relegation zone.

Results in other competitions have offered little relief. Manchester United recorded 1 win and 2 defeats from their opening 3 Champions League matches, before being eliminated from the EFL Cup at their first fixture in the competition.

This awful run of form has piled further pressure on Carrick. Manchester United are currently on an 8 match winless streak across all competitions, which includes the heavy defeats to Como and Bournemouth.

Solskjaer's Tenure Serves As A Warning For The United Board

Solskjaer's experience demonstrates how the nature of pressure changes fundamentally once a manager is appointed permanently. No longer are they only tasked with stopping the rot - they are expected to deliver consistent results and build a squad capable of competing over an entire full season.

Solskjaer did go on to guide Manchester United to a 3rd place finish in 2019/2020 and 2nd place the following season. He was ultimately dismissed in November 2021 however, after the team's form once again deteriorated sharply.

Over the course of his permanent tenure, Solskjaer recorded 78 wins, 33 draws and 38 defeats from 149 matches in charge.

Carrick now faces an almost identical challenge, though the two situations are not perfectly alike. Solskjaer was granted time to rebuild after his early slump, while pressure on Carrick has escalated dramatically with United now hovering just above the relegation places.

Internal club debate over the next steps is also ongoing. Julian Nagelsmann, Eddie Howe and Kieran McKenna have all been linked with the Manchester United Head Coach position, though reports of potential replacements do not confirm that a decision to sack Carrick has already been finalised.

Following the Bournemouth defeat, pundit Jamie Carragher was among those who stated that Carrick's position at Old Trafford is now under serious threat. For now however, Manchester United have confirmed Carrick will remain in charge for the club's upcoming weekend fixture against Chelsea.
