The title fight between Marc Marquez and Jorge Martin for the 2026 MotoGP World Championship has entered a new phase at Sepang Circuit. However, Friday's first free practice session (FP1) for MotoGP Malaysia delivered a starkly contrasting picture for the two title contenders.
Marquez laid down dominant form with Ducati Lenovo. The Spanish rider set a fastest lap time of 1:58.912, standing as the only competitor to break under the 1 minute 59 second barrier.
By contrast, Martin is still struggling to find full pace, finishing the session only 20th out of the 22 riders on track.

The Aprilia Racing rider is making his return to competition after suffering a fractured right wrist.
While FP1 results do not dictate how the rest of the race Weekend will play out, they provide an early indicator for both riders. Marquez has come out of the gate with raw pace on his side, while Martin is still working to rebuild his race form following his injury layoff.
Marquez Holds Near Half Second Advantage
Marquez ran confidently right from the start of the session, even with Sepang's track surface still damp after heavy rain the previous day. He set his benchmark lap and pulled clear of the entire field by a comfortable margin.
Marco Bezzecchi of Aprilia Racing and Pedro Acosta of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing were his closest challengers. Both riders set an identical lap time of 1:59.386, exactly 0.474 seconds adrift of Marquez.
This gap underlines just how prepared Marquez is heading into the 19th round of the 2026 MotoGP season. The rider nicknamed The Baby Alien also secured an early psychological edge by topping the timesheets in the very first session of the weekend.
KTM showed strong pace at Sepang, with the Austrian manufacturer placing three riders inside the top five: Acosta in 3rd, Enea Bastianini 4th, and Brad Binder 5th.
Bastianini posted a lap time of 1:59.688, 0.776 seconds behind Marquez, while Binder followed just 0.825 seconds off the leading time.
Further down the order, Franco Morbidelli finished 6th, followed by Alex Marquez in 7th and Johann Zarco in 8th. Fabio Di Giannantonio took 9th place, while rookie Diogo Moreira rounded out the top 10.
Martin Still Fighting To Regain Form Post-Injury

All eyes were firmly on Martin this weekend. The reigning 2024 MotoGP World Champion is making his comeback after sustaining the broken right wrist injury, with his physical condition set to be a critical factor for his performance at Sepang.
Across FP1, Martin completed just 12 laps over two separate runs out on track. His fastest recorded lap was 2:00.747, a full 1.835 seconds slower than Marquez's leading time.
20th place is far from the result Martin would have wanted, especially while chasing the world championship title. That said, this result must be viewed in context of his ongoing physical recovery.
Martin was cleared fit to continue the race weekend following post-FP1 medical evaluations, opening the door for him to improve his pace across the remaining sessions.
Tight 10 Point Gap Heats Up Title Battle
The head-to-head battle between Marquez and Martin is the central narrative of the 2026 MotoGP Malaysia round. Just 10 points separate the pair in the championship Standings, with Marquez currently holding the lead at the top of the table.
This tight margin means every single session at Sepang carries huge weight. Marquez will be aiming to defend his advantage while avoiding costly errors, while Martin will need to maximise every minute on track to close the gap.
For Martin, the biggest challenge is not just beating Marquez, but also proving his injured wrist can hold up under the full physical demands of grand prix racing. Conversely, Marquez has a clear opportunity to extend his championship lead if he can maintain this consistent form.
FP1 is only the first step. The real fight is still wide open, and all attention will now be on how quickly Martin can find race pace, and how Marquez responds over the remaining sessions here at Sepang.
